Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / attention seeking?

benji has been dry in the house now for nearly a month. and as a result we hav ebeen able to offer him more access to the house in more areas., he was at first confined to the kitchen and garden with access to the garden all the time. our living room leads off the kitchen and we had a door guard up in the doorway so he could see us in the living room but not come in. we would let him in the living room supervised as its open plan to our second living room.

now he is dry he has access to the both living rooms and the kitchen and garden all the time.

at night he has chosen to no longer sleep i his bed in the kitchen and now sleeps in the livingroom. he has been doign this for 2 weeks and its all been fine.

every morning i come down and shut him in the garden to eat his breakfast, so my kittens dont interfear with him . he likes the piece and quite. when he is finished i let him come back to having full access again.

now most mornings bethany my little girl. comes down stairs and sits on her bean bag next to the t.v.

however one morning a few days ago, bethany was still up stairs as she was being bathed by her father. so i wandered u stairs to get bethany once dressed and when i came back down benji had emptied in the area bethany ussualy sits.

now in the past when he dirtied he would become very quite and submissive, with head heald low and crying. and so i trhought he had run out the back as i could not see him.

however when i called him he wa sin the second living room and he walked up to me bold as brass, and looked at what he had done and did not seem botherd by it at all.

i cleaned it up and bought bethany down.

he hasnt done it again.

now he actually sleeps in the area he had messed that day, which is the area bethany sits in.

any idea wht he would of done this?

Its definately NOT attention seeking!

Its highly likely (how old is he now?) that this is part of him maturing, about him knowing its his house etc etc.. i know Pteppic has peed on our sofas a couple of times, and both times in the place i most frequently sit!

If you dont catch him in the act, there is nothing you can say or do to teach him anything, and shouting or scolding will possibly make things worse.

If you DO catch him in the act, say NO and take him outside.

Couple that with actually going WITH him when he is let out to toilet (hard i know when you have Bethany to mind as well) and reward him really well for going out there.

It should settle down as he matures though.

Does Bethany's Dad normally take a part in her care?  Was there any other change in routine?  This can set some dogs off, as can family disagreements, distress and other strong emotions.......  Dogs rarely do something like this for no reason, but it's not often the most obvious reason to us humans.
