Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Any suggestions on change of diet

I feed my boy Beta (Adult) and I mix in beef mince or lamb mince.  Someone suggested that Beta is not very good and I should change him onto something else (may be nature diet).  He has always been okay on Beta but if it is not good for him I am up for change.  He is a 19 month old dobermann.

If he is in good condition and the food suits him then why change ? :)

Someone said that Beta wasn't a very good food, and I could end up with problems later in life with my boy.  To be honest I have been okay with him on this food, and his condition, health etc. is all okay, but I was talking to a behaviourist and she just asked what I was feeding him on and it went from there, but I haven't got a problem keeping him on his diet.

What were the problems you were told that he would have in later life ?

If you have a problem with behaviour then it might be worth a change but if his health and behaviour are both ok, why fix what isn't broke?

Having said that, you asked for good foods so
Burns
James Wellbeloved
Autarky  (half the price of the above)

and any food which has a named meat source (ie. chicken/lamb/etc instead of meat by products or derivatives) named carbohydrate (ie. rice/corn/etc. instead of 'cereals' ) and has natural preservatives ;) get into reading labels and you'll soon realise that some foods have so many ingredients and that may manufacturers break up the carbohydrates into different 'bits' - add them together and they are the main ingredient ;)

Dill,
Thanks for that.  His behaviour I think is pretty normal as of an 18 month old.  The only problem I had was about 14-15 months old he developed a sexual aggression to other male dogs, I had him castrated last week, and someone suggested that changing his food could help with his behaviour also.

Dear Lucy,

I was told that he could suffer with heart, liver, kidneys etc. - just really that generally Beta was not a good quality food for him.  The problem is that I lost my first dobermann (18 years ago) when he was only 6, it was a heart problem, so I do worry quite a bit about this one.  He is 18 months old now and obviously I want to do what is best.
