Hi Jill,
TBH your best bet is to wait until your kids are a bit older - very young kids + very young pup = a mum who has little energy to have any time for herself and not enough time to devote 100% to either the children's needs or a young pup's very demanding training regime :(
As to picking a pup based on colour, that should be your last criteria having first contacted and communicated with several breeders recommended by the breed Clubs who will be known to carry out the relevant health tests for the breed and should be putting good temperament as their top priority.
No responsible or respected breeder will agree to sell you two pups at the same time, particularly litter mates. As to considering breeding from siblings, there are dedicated breeders in every breed who would not carry out such a close coupling and of those who do it would only be after much research and knowing the full background re type, health, temperament etc of the dogs on both sides of the pedigree for several generations.
If this is the breed you have your heart set on, research it for a few years, trace breeders who strive to maintain and produce only the best lines to ensure a well reared, healthy and well socialised pup and forget notions of colour and distance to travel. Any dog is a serious commitment for 12-15 years so travelling an extra couple of hundred miles or paying an extra £100 or so should be viewed as worthwhile investments to ensure you get a family pet which is easily trained and a pleasure to live with.
Sorry that this is probably not the sort of answer you were looking for, but sometimes a reality check is more beneficial in the long term.
Regards, Teri
