We've had our 5month old pup for a month now, and when he came to us he needed toilet training. We've pretty much cracked this now, using training pads for when we're out and he goes in the garden when we're home. The problem we have is when we're out he's consistently pooing and walking through it (he doesn't do this when we're around) and then treading and smearing it all over the place. How can we stop him doing this, and any thoughts on why he does it? The obvious is to tell him no when we spot him going to do it, but it never happens when we're in. We've had dogs before and not come across this problem.

Sorry no help, but I ahve a whole litter doing this before and while I try to clear up :D  Little S**t machines :D

I'd suggest getting a dog crate to pop him inwhilst you're out, he'll stay clean and you'll know he's safe too.

Bin the training pads.

Effectively, what yu have done is trained the pup to think its fine to toilet indoors when you arent there.

What you really need to be teaching him, is that toileting outside is VERY rewarding (ie you stand there adn throw a flipping party when he does, hand out treats etc), and that he does sometimes have to WAIT to go outside.

Defnately get him a crate, and NOT one big enough for him to poo in one end and lie down in another. Teach him that this is a nice quiet place to go lay down, give him treats in there etc, its a LOVELY place to be, not a punishment of any kind.

Hopefully he wont want to poo in his den, and you can gradually get him  used to sleeping in there when yu are out.
