Is it the english mastiff , dane or wolfhound?
the mastiff can be the heaviest but wolfhound the tallest , just wondering which is considered the "largest dog breed"
Is it the chihuahua , i heard they can be up to 500 lbs.
I think it may be the Tosa which isnt legal in the UK. They can wiegh up to and over 200lbs

The IW is definitely the tallest. Think the St Bernard may be the heaviest, but not sure.

I think that Mastiffs are definately the heaviest. A male Mastiff should weigh roughly 17-20 stone!!

My 6 month old pup weighs about 7 stone already!!!
The breed standard says that males should be MINIMUM of 30 inches at the shoulder. I know many that are taller. Not sure if this is the tallest, but the breed standard of the Great Dane is the same (30").

IW Breed Standard - Size: Minimum height for dogs: 79 cms (31 ins), bitches: 71 cms (28 ins). Minimum weight: 54.5 kgs (120 lbs) for dogs, 40.9 kgs (90 lbs) for bitches. Great size, including height of shoulder and proportionate length of body is to be aimed at, and it is desired to firmly establish a breed that shall average from 81-86 cms (32-34 ins) in dogs.
It could also be the Leonberger male dogs should stand upto 31 1/2 inches which according to the breed standard for the Irish Wolfhound the Leonberger is half an inch taller, also it says on the breed standard for the St Bernard the bigger the better

The largest Mastiff ever recorded was named Zorba. Zorba weighed 343 pounds, stood 37 inches at the shoulder, and was 8 feet 3 inches long from nose to tail. Zorba has been recorded with the Guinness Book of World Records.

If you scroll down the page, there is a picture of Zorba. :-) Sorry....still cant do links, you will have to cut 'n' paste. ;-)
Zorba's tail is almost as thick as the mans thigh

Imagine being tail whipped with that! It would knock you off your feet.

Tough question MannyG!!! There are always exceptions to every breed, so how do we really tell??!! :-)
Tallest dog in the world is a Great Dane Gibson from the US who stand 43 (!) inches at the shoulder, pic here :

Heaviest is either one of the Matiffs or the Saint Bernard, Guiness record swaps back and forth between the two.
I have berner cross newfie and the newfie Zantas dad weighs 12 stone,Zanta already 6 stone at 6 mnths,i sincerely hope she doesnt get as big as some of those you have mentioned we will be moving to the shed ., we did know she would be a big girl though.

I have a lovely 6 month old IWH, he is already pushing 8 stone (sorry can't do kilos!) and measures 32" at the shoulders :-)

Oooh I was never any good at 'weights and measures'. I can work out 'stones' into pounds, ie 4 stone = 4 x 14lbs = 56lbs but when someone talks in lbs only, ie 500lbs I have hell of a job with division :D I've gotten used to working in kilos now but I just guess the closest number when converting to lbs! Molly who's 8 months weighs 38kg, roughly 90lbs?? and that in stones is???? No, give me a minute I'll get it :D

I use this site to convert things if i cant figure it out. HTH :D

38kg is 5.9 stone. :-)

Thanks mackleback, :)
Dee
P.S. I'd worked it out to 6 stone 6 lbs :D told you I'm useless :P

Of course 5.9 stone would usually be written as 5 stone 13 lb.

So I was nearly right then JG? :D :D
And if I want MY weight converting, I will ask you instead of guessing myself :P :P as yours was lighter than mine ;)
