Sam is 18 months old and has just started to cock his leg. The garden is beginning to smell like a toilet he seems to go on anything and everything. Should I tell him off and just get him to go in a particular place or should I just ignore it. I've had bitches before and trained them to go in a certain place but I'm not sure if a dog can be controlled like that. I'd be grateful for any advice.
Hi ange,
Dont know about other dogs im sure their will be alot of other dog owners that are able to give you some advice on this but We trained our GSD male to "go" in one area.
All we did to achieve this was to clean the entire area throughly where we didnt want him to toilet and left the area where we did want him to relieve himself, when we let him out for the toilet we would go to the area and ask him to go, if he did we would give huge praises and rewards, if he didnt go where we wanted and went elsewhere we just ignored it and cleaned the area over.
He picked it up really quickly and within about two weeks was only toileting in one area, he still uses that area now and i can clean it and he will still go back there.

hi am interested in this topic in prep for when mine starts raising his leg. how do you clean the area if its grass?
if its a pee pee a bucket of water thrown over straight away should dilute it and stop any brown patches. or so i've been told not had to try it as we not got any brown patches :D

Oooooo....i might try that one Jane. I have started to notice brown patches appearing in a few places. :-)

You must have had more rain than us. Our lawn is mostly brown with a few green patches. When the rain is forecast it always misses Cheltenham. Fingers crossed for some rain tomorrow Mackleback.
>>When the rain is forecast it always misses Cheltenham.>>
That must be because it is always here!! Thats what happens when you live in "not so sunny" Scotland!!! :-)
ah its not so sunny with you zoe cos ive got your share lol
but i still dont have any brown marks..... big holes ... well now thats another matter :D :D
Yep, big holes appearing - my two apparantly know nothing of these mysterious holes and when I show them to them they look at me as if to say 'blimey, look at them big holes, wonder where they come from !' :D
I thought it was only girls that gave you brown marks on teh lawn though - I have two boys (one done one not) and I've never had brown marks on our lawn, had lots from little girl dogs but never from boys.
