Hi, my friend is picking up a 7 week old yorkshire terrier today and he says the breeder told him it wont need the first jag at all, just one at 10 weeks. He was wondering if this is true?? Anyone know?? Thanks :-)

It needs two!!!! Maybe the breeder meant not to have the first one until it's 10 weeks as most toy breeders don't have them done until later than the bigger breeds. I'm taking my mum's Pomeranian for her first one at 12 weeks then she'll have her second at 14 weeks.

Thanks perrodeagua, thats what i told him. But he says the breeder said that the puppy is immune to the first one....so it only needs 1, at 10 weeks!!!! He also said that he asked his vet (a different vet from mine) and was told the same!!!!

No, two jabs are needed. If the first is given too young, the maternal antibodies still in the pup's circulation (providing the dam's vaccinations were up-to-date) will render it pointless. The two injections need to be two weeks apart - some protocols have them at 8 and 10 weeks, and others at 10 and 12 weeks of age. But two are definitely required.

Thanks JG. I have tried to tell him, but he says the breeder has 35 years experience, so she should know best!! He is SOOO stubborn and wont listen to me. :-( If the pup only gets 1 jab, it wont be protected at all will it?

It will have some protection, but it won't be fully protected, and will be at risk. :(
Our vets won't inject until 8 weeks old and then again at 12 weeks

My vets do them at 8 weeks and then 10 weeks of age. Though I do my toy breeds much later, Emma the Pomeranian is having her first one in a weeks time at a day under 12 weeks.

My litter of yorkshire terriers had their first injections at 8 weeks and their second injections at 12 weeks, that was my vets advice. he also told me about an injection that is out now, that you only need one, but said he would not recommend anyone having that one. A friend of his who was also a vet used the one only injection on his own litter of pups, and they all got parvo at a few months old and died.

Poor puppies!! :-( My friend got his pup on Saturday and i will be going to see it tomorrow. What could i say to him to change his mind?? He still thinks that i am talking rubbish!!! Any ideas anyone???
Hi zoe,
Tell him what Cath H has just said about those poor pups that died. Sounds like its a very new vaccine. Must admit i was looking at vac's the other day and never found any mention of a single dose for new pups. Maybe your friend is getting confused with the booster jabs as i read the nobivac DHPPI can be done every 3 yrs now instead. the lepto still needs to be every year thou.
Good luck with it, i know how you feel, heads and brick walls spring to mind :D :D

Thanks Jane, i will try again. He is actually a friend of my OH and is VERY stubborn!! He is still convinced that the breeder knows what she is talking about (and that i dont :-( ) He has actually bought the puppy on a bit of a whim, without really doing any research at all. :-( Him and his wife are both out of the house from 8am till 6pm, he pops home for 10mins at lunch time. When my OH spoke to him yesterday, he was moaning about the wee and poo all over his house, as if he hadnt expected it to do the toilet!!!

Will let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed that he will be willing to learn and do whats best for his new puppy!! :-) Thanks for everyones help. :-)
>>he was moaning about the wee and poo all over his house,
sorry but i couldnt help but laugh at that :D.... what does he honestly expect from a puppy especially when left alone all day.Point out he should be thankful he had a house to come home too all be it a bit wet n pongy! lol Might not have been so lucky with some other breeds ( like our kai :D )
he would have been better off buying a gerbil, atleast they dont care if your out all day :D
Fingers crossed here hoping he gets some sense ( shame you cant buy
that at tescos :D :D )

I would tell your friend to phone some vets surgeries up, and then perhaps he will believe that the puppy should have two injections, hope you manage to convince him for the sake of the little pup.

Thanks for your help CathH. I will pass on what you have said and let you know how it goes. :-)

He shouldn't have got a puppy, if both working full time and leaving it all day alone, suggest he gets another one to keep it company, makes sure his garden is well secured with high fences and locks, and fit a large cat flap, all the yorkies I have had have always used flaps to go in and out. They soon train to them, though on saying that having a bit of a problem training my 15 week pup to it, but it doesn.t help when her mum goes flying through it like a lunatic and it nearly knocks poor pup out who is usually right behind her.

I agree....he shouldnt have got a puppy. :-( Not sure about his garden etc. It wasnt secure the last time i visited, but hopefully he will have sorted that out before the arrival of the pup. I will check when i go and visit. The cat flap is a great idea, i hadnt thought of that!! Pity my Mastiff pup wouldnt fit through one!! ;-)
Thanks again for your advise and i will, no doubt, have lots more to share once i have visited.
makes you wonder about the breeder really.... allowing a pup to go to a household with nobody at home all day :-(

I agree with the TWO injections and also WHY did the poopy(very poopy!! all over the house!) get sold to someone NOT at home all day??? Beggars belief really! Tell him I have agood home waiting for a Yorkie, My lil Pepe needs a pal!! LOL But yes I AM home all day! If he took the pup to the Vets for it's health check, then surely the Vet would advise about the jabs?? All the best, Dawn.
