Could anyone help me or advise me on this. I want to buy an akita pup but having difficulty finding one in my area. I live in the nottinghamshire area. Ive contacted plenty of adverts but find it very hard to trust the owners. For example should i buy a pup that its owners say their Dog and Bitch are a pedigree but the pups will not be KC registered and only used in the home as a pet??. Its the first time i have bought a dog so any advicce wouyld be much appreciated.

Just take care they are not puppy farms. They have pedigree dogs.
But, there puppies are not KC.
Look on Champdogs...you should find one..

I would avoid non KC registered pups. Usually, if the parents are KC registered they will have endorsements on their registration to prohibit any litters they might produce from being registered. Breeders place these restriction on pups to try to stop buyers from indiscriminately breeding from the dog in future. The restrictions may be lifted by the breeder if they are satisfied that all relevant health tests have been carried out (and the results are satisfactory) and that the dog is a good enough specimen to be bred from. It is unlikely therefore that the type of litters you describe will be from health tested parents. Such endorsements obviously do not prevent unscrupulous people from breeding but there will be less guarantees with regard to the future health of the pups and often, the two dogs mated may not be great examples of the breed so resulting puppies won't be either.

Akitas are beautiful dogs. You deserve the best example of the breed even if it is only for a 'pet' home. Please do not be tempted to get one of these pups. Hopefully someone more experienced in the breed will be along soon to tell you which health tests Akitas should have and maybe point you in the direction of good breeders.

Never buy a non-KC Reg. puppy - there's no genuine reason why a pup should not be registered. Only buy from a litter where both parents have been hip scored and have a score of around or less than 14. Also make sure that the parents have current clear eye certificates & ask whether the breeding has any history of VKH, entropion or thyroid imbalance. Temperament is of prime importance in such a powerful breed, don't be put off by any excuses, insist on meeting mum & all the pups who should be fearless without any sign of aggression. If the breeders only own 2 or 3 dogs & the sire of the pups is one of them, be aware that this may not be the best mating, only done for cheapness & convenience. There are good Akita breeders around, unfortunately there are too many breeding who haven't got a clue about the breed. Ask plenty of questions & find out how much they really know about the breed.
Finally, contact the Akita Club who should be able to point you in the right direction.
