Topic Dog Boards / General / car booster seat for westie
- By JuneH [gb] Date 02.09.05 12:26 UTC
My pup gets very car sick and he is too short to look out the window so I am trying to find a booster seat. I found one on a USA site called a "lookout" but they dont ship to UK. Does anyone know of anywhere I can buy this product or a similar. (not the bag type ones for tiny dogs please) This is a booster which fixes to the car seat belt system and is shaped for a dog.

Hi June,

Not much help as far as the booster seat goes - didn't know there was such a thing for dogs.  Anyway, what I'm thinking is that him looking out of the window and being able to see traffic and trees etc whizzing past is IMO likely to make him feel more ill.  One of mine was dreadful for car sickness but this was improved by caging her in the rear of the car and actually covering the cage so she couldn't see out.

Just a thought - may not be practical or effective with your dog.  Regards, Teri :)

Isn't that funny, my sister used to get terrible travel sickness as a child, but once she sat on a cushion and so could see out and she never felt bad again!!!

I have never suffered with travel sickness but I couldn't travel in a car if I couldn't see out of it!

My pup is GUARANTEED to be sick if he can see out. Put him in the footwell, front or back and he is fine. On a lap or seat, adn 'blarghhhh'.

Thanks patty but its the wrong type - more like a bag that is lifted right off the seat. Only for tiny dogs. The one I have seen on ebay USA is more boxy and sits on the seat but raises the dog up 9".

Remember, the safest place for a dog is in the footwell of the front passenger seat.

What about a 'pet stow away', that has a raised bed for dog and suitcase type container underneith for bits and peices? Or a pet car seat that elevates the pet. http://www.petlondon.net/acatalog/Pet_Car_Seat.html

Thanks sullysmum the pet stowaway looks like it might be the thing.

Thanks all for your advice - Looking out the window so that one can see the horizon often helps with travel sickness as its not being able to see it that confuses the brain. Putting a dog in the foot well might be ok if it doesnt jump around or you dont have airbags, but with the family in the car too there isnt room!

Hi June,

>Looking out the window so that one can see the horizon often helps with travel sickness as its not being able to see it that confuses the brain

That is a theory applied to humans - not dogs ;)  However I hope your idea works for you - or rather, your dog.

Good luck, Teri :)

Thanks, its worth a try anyway. My husband is going to make me a booster seat modelled on the one I have seen, so if it doesnt work out then its on to the next theory!!
