- By sandra33 [gb] Date 28.08.05 06:42 UTC
I've been told the opposite by my vet, pups at 2, 4, 6 & 8 weks, mum at same time as first worming with pups, but that's it.  Never had a pup with worms yet - she says with fingers crossed ;-)

Thank you for your replies, I think I will worm her each time as the pups like Staffie lover has said, I do appreciate all replies tho' so thank you Sandra

yes worm mum at the same time as the pups.i do 3,5,7.9.
i still think two weeks is to earley wait untill they being wean, about 3 week so they got soild food in their tummy, another never wornm and vacc the puppys the same week do alturn week one worm then other vacc, beacuse if the pup got a reaction to one of them you will know which one it be ,but do them together you will not know, plus you over loading they system

i dont worm until 3 weeks either, i start them on food at 3 weeks and them worm then 2 days after, then every 2 weeks,  if you dont do mum at the same time she will just get worms again from the pups

It's funny as I was thinking about this last night. If you worm at 2 weeks and worm Mum at the same time, if she is still cleaning the pups faeces is it not just a viscious circle? I have decided to do 3,5,7 & 9 to ;-)

No, because the passed worms are dead ... ;) However there are still more larvae developing, so worming needs to be repeated.
:)

Are they dead or just knocked out? I've noticed when worming my puppies that the passed worms can actually move, it made me wonder if the worming liquid/tablets was a sort of worm sedative...something to stop them holding on... just curious...lol  :)

Depends on what wormer it is.  The newer ones will disolve the worms (definately dead) unless the worm burden is huge you won't see any actual worms passed, they also kill the laval stages so don't need to be given as often but are more expensive.

Some of the older ones just purge them from the gut.

Hiya, I'm using drontal puppy suspension, Brainless i was glad to read your post because i was getting a little worried at not seeing any worms come from the pups( will teach me to read all the instruction leaflet). All that I have seen in just 1 or 2 of them is like you have described and thought that they had just a loose motion, Sassy has always been well wormed and was wormed again before mating. I didnt worm her while she was pregnant tho', and reading through the posts on here it eased my mind a bit after seeing that a lot of you dont worm while pregnant either. I think this is a brilliant site with all the help you offer to everyone and have told all my friends to take a look if ever they have a problem
thank you all

Thta's really interesting Brainless, thanks. I'm using Johnsons puppy worming syrup - it was the only puppy wormer at the pet food cash and carry where I stock up. I did order wormers online once but can't remember the web site... they were an equine and dog wormer supply co i think. What wormers do other people use and where do they get them?

I got mine online from petvet care

so is it fine to see one or two worms after worming. i am using panacur 10% and worm over 3 days a recommended. i noticed the worms 2 days after the last dose they don't seem to be moving. and i was concerned that the wormer hadn't worked. i worm at 2 5 and 8 weeks then again at 12 if i am keeping a pup on.mother is wormed at all those times plus i also worm my other dogs at the pups 5 week stage to prevent them catching anything from mum once she has been out.

I have never ever seen worms on mine but I ahve been wortnming the pregnant bitches for several generations so suspect that they will ahve less encysted larva in their tissues to pass on to their pups while pregnant, and I am then worming her too.

In a rescue litter my freidn had who had never been wormed and Mum had never ever been wormed either they had a lot of worms ans she saw lots of them passed in motions and being sicked up, poor pups were anaemic too, and had terrible dirhoea not from the wormer but from the heavy infestation.

So I would think if the pups had any of the mature worms you woudl see soem in the poo, but obviously not the larvaol stages that are also killed.

That product is not that effective as it only acts only on the adult worms, which is why it has to be given much more frequently.  You are much better using one of the Veterinary womers not those sold in supermarkets or pet stores that are really not very good.
- By ikkledevil2004 [gb] Date 01.09.05 13:39 UTC
the product i used is the one my vet recommends.although i dont buy it from the vet because i get it from the wholesaler when i get my other products for my pet shop. it only needs to be used at 3,5,  8 and 12 weeks it covers all types of worms. which is why i choose it.i have seen other products that are to be used more often. i wormed my bitch from 53 days with it and never had any problems i was just curious whether seeing them meant it was working or not as my dogs have never had wormers before. but i usually worm them anyway.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.09.05 14:32 UTC
That might explain why you saw worms.  If you haven't wormed your dogs before then your bitch would have likely passed on a considerable amount to the pups for the wormer to have to tackle.

Dog should be wormed as pups monthly until 6 months then 3 monthsly to a year, and then 3 to 6 monthly thereafter throughout their lives.

Hello there,
I have used Panacur on my adult dogs for many years and also used it on my recent litter. Apart from giving the pups slightly runny tums, I also seen worms in their poo. I had read somewhere that Panacur dissolves worms and that you shouldnt see them at all. I was a bit concerned so e-mailed the company that produces Panacur for advice. They told me that Panacur does not work by dissolving the worms but actually starves the worms so to see them in the poo is perfectly normal :)
Hope this reassures you.
