As many of you know Cleo lost her litter at birth about 5 weeks ago. She still has discharge, mainly clear and think mucus but occassionaly it is dark red/brown, sticky and thinck. It has no smell. I was wondering if this is usual, as i know that the birth was very hard on her. I am due to have her spayed in a fortnight, and wondered whther this time frame would be right for her - should it be earlier or later in view of the discharge? She is perfectly fine and happy in herself.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated :D Thanks!

I would say its normal.
My last litter was born 7/1 and the mother still had a very slight discharge
7 weeks later.

Cheers Kay, just what i wanted to hear! :D Whats your take on the spaying issue, when do you think the best time is to get it done in relation to the whelping?

Well there is no problem haveing her done in a couple of weeks.
Just make sure she is in tip top condition before hand.
If she isnt back to the body she had before the pups I would wait
till she is. But must stress thats what I would do.

Body shape is the same as before she was pregnant, though she still has a little (and i stress little) excess skin where her milk was. Her teats point in different directions too! Figure this is normal though

She sounds in great shape for 5 weeks post welping.
If she were mine I would go ahead.
Such a shame what happened at least your girl is fine now.
Did you get any reason for what happened
I remember you saying she had a cold a few weeks into
pregnancy could have been an infection.

Could have been bacterial or environmental, but the main thing other staffy breeders seem to be saying is that it was probably that both dogs had the same recessive gene - i have been finding some slightly dodgy things out about the amount of dogs the stud dog owner produces, and think maybe over-breeding led to it - they are both the same line. I was told to give it another go, with a complete outcross, but cleos dad was an outcross so that could have bought it in. Don't think i could go through all the worry again - especially thinking that it might happen again, so i am retiring her!!!!! Also she is so happy not to be pregnant, turned into a wee bit of a nutter, but that'll calm down. New boy due to be born in 3 weeks, should be a corker - can't wait, kind of makes it worth while
