Have any of you heard of or bought Autarky?
Someone has recomended this to me for my great dane puppy, she is 4 1/2 months old and has been on puppy food but its not agreeing with her! Have been giving her cooked mince with it witch she loves but but its going straight through her!
I need to change her diet any help and advice would be gratefully recieved

I am using Autarky at the moment, it is often recommended on here and is a sensible price, so I thought I'd give it a try. No complaints, and the dogs are enthusiastic about it too.

Ok and do you just give it as it comes or do you add anything to it?

No adding things to it unless it is another complete diet, be that a Wet food or a natural diet  (some feed it with Barf, but the Barf needs to be balanced over time), otherwise the diet will be unbalanced.

Have fed it before...had very good results.

Thanks, my local pet shop stocks it! Would you recomend puppy or adult for a great dane!
Not sure of her weight but is the size of a lab now at 4 1/2 month

The puppy is not excessively high in protein at 28% and is 45% chicken meal, The adult is 22% protein and 28% of it is chicken meal.

Not having giant breeds I don't know which would be best.

Please do not feed a great dane puppy food,put him straight onto adult.

I feed it to my dobe and my terrier -I give them both the adult and mix it with a bit of nature diet and water :)

I used to feed Autarky to my puppies they seemed to be doing fine on it but then decided  they were not going to eat it anymore so I had to change diet

My dog is fed Autarky and she loves it - looks really great on it too :)

Mine will eat most things but they really like the Autarky and it stops the second eldests bouts of sicking up bile.

Have got my baby girl on adult autarky and shes enjoying it and its not going straight through her!! :-)

No its a wholesalers similar to mackro.

I buy mine from Downtown Garden center Just off the A1 at Grantham :D
But only found 2 places to buy it so far.
You can get it from CSJ on the net but it is £1 more expensive than I get it at and you have to pay postage as well.

does your local tesco sell Autarky Premium (the one with herbs) or Autarky Gusto, a cheaper food (still at least as good as any other ordinary dog food, and much better than many) :?:

Just phoned Tesco's up and my local store sells the small bags of Autarky only which are 2.5kg of both spring and summer versions for £3.25.

You lucky people, my local tesco only carries gusto - and darned lucky we are to have it too!  they seem to prefer to stock all the 'junkfood' makes ;)

If you phone their helpline on 0870 442 3322 they will be able to give you details of your local stockist.  Unfortunately they don't have an up and running website at the moment (it says its currently under construction)!

I feed Autarky and have had good results on it.

I buy my Autarky from www.specialistdogfood.co.uk - it costs me £14.50 for a big sack.

I get mine from the local Farmway for £14.49. I'm sure that the manufacturers have made the nuggets smaller recently.

Dose adding water to this matter at all? my baby seemed to be struggling eating as she is loosing teeth so i added a drop of warm water left it for about 15 mins to soften it slightly and she isnt leaving any now! And she seems happier :-)

It doesnt hurt at all as long as the water isnt boiling as apparantly this can destroy the nutrients.  I soak Fagans food for about 24 hours before feeding to turn it into a mush this is because he only eats about a quarter of it so the rest of it I have to force feed him :(

Clairey how and why do you have to force feed your dog?

Fagan is one of those dogs who doesnt "do" food, no matter how long he is left without food how many times I "pick up his bowl after 10 minutes"  he refuses food.  He has recently started eating half bowls of food, and on the rare occassion a whole bowl :) but as he is so thin (he looks like an advert for the RSPCA ) although he is healthy and active he just looks awful and it cant be doing him any good in the long run, so if he decides not to eat or only eat half his bowl then the rest has to be force fed, similar to giving a pill, I make it into a mush and put it down his throat and he actually doesnt seem to mind and sits there waiting for more :rolleyes:  I often come into work with hands smelling of tripe

I believe it is quite common amongst Irish Setter people to have to force feed their dogs, which is very sad :(

Don't know how old Fagan is?  In my breed picky, finnicky eating can be a problem in the first few months through to the junior stage so I can empathise BUT, on the whole, I'd be a bit concerned about lengthy disinterest in food in an obviously skinny dog.  Certainly I'd not recommend tripe if it is something he does not want to eat naturally - there could be an underlying reason that foods high in fat make him feel unwell and you may then be storing up a problem for later on.

I agree, if this is common in your breed it is very sad - but I'd still think somewhere along the line there has to be a reason .... :(

To be honest I think it is in his breeding, he is 17 months old, his sister has been fed this way since she was about 8 months old and his brother isnt overly keen on food either (im not sure about the others in his litter).  He has been checked over by the vet numerous times and nothing has been found to be wrong with him.  He has started eating the past few months but only usually eats about half of what he should and I am hoping by making him eat it his stomach will start to expand back to its normal size (it must have shrunk with him not eating much for so long) and therefore encourage him to eat more himself.  He is coming on in leaps and bounds and usually eats all of his evening meal :)

Well if he's making progress you'll be relieved :)  I did have to force raw mini minced meatballs down my first ever pup's thoat at just 12 weeks :(  Went on for about two weeks and gradually she began to eat but we had to be very inventive.  Thankfully, although she was a picky one until around 2 years of age, she ended up a great little (big!) eater and it didn't seem to cause any harm getting off to a poor start.

I had to do this with a freinds pregnant bitch, and she ended up with a C section ,and was very thin, so I continued to do so throughout the 8 weeiks she fed her pups, as she just would not eat.  Thankfully by then she had regained some condition, and when she went home she gradually returned to eating.

I was chatting to other Irish owners at a club funday we had and I was surprised at the amount of people who had to force feed theirs, one lady has been force feeding one of hers for 7 years

Hopefully we have reached the turning point with Fagan and he will soon be a gannet like little Alf (who doesnt need telling twice to eat his food :rolleyes: )

Clairy have you tried different foods? Naturediet,raw,homecooked etc. Maybe he doesnt like dry food :)

I'm really interested in this as i have a skinny picky eater,but i have never thought of force feeding her,i would have thought that would put her off of eating even more :( I've found the more song and dance you make about their eating,the worse they get.She eats better if i put her bowl down,dont make eye contact and just walk away,like i couldnt care less if she ate or not,but inside i'm screaming "please eat,eat you bitch" :o

I have tried everything with him, he is currently on a mix of BARF and autarky.  I dont generally make a fuss at meal times I put his bowl down and he looks at it and I point and say "eat it" and he goes over and takes a few mouthfulls, sometimes clearing the bowl but more often not, I leave him to it and once he walks away I just forcefeed him the rest, it really doesnt bother him.

you can get it direct from goldline (owners) its much cheaper & no delivery cost :)

Can you feed non working dogs on this food

Yes! All the 'for working dogs only' bit means is that it's VAT-free. It's perfectly fine for any dog to eat.
