I am interested in bringing a stray puppy or 2 to the US from Athens.  I know the US customs requirements for entry but am not sure about how to obtain the documentation of ownership since this is a street dog's litter.  I believe strays belong to the Ministry of Agriculture so I suppose one applies for papers from them.  I cannot find anything on their website about that and would like to know how long it takes to obtain the "pet passport."  Because the puppies are <3mos old, they do not (& cannot yet) need to have had rabies shots but just visual inspection of health at entry.

I have checked into Air France's requirements of handcarry of pets and their weight limit is only 5kg.  From seeing other postings, it appears other airlines allow a greater weight.  Can more than one puppy can be carried on in the same case if they are small/light enough ?

Because we did not know how to go about bringing the puppies before our departure time,  I am now looking for someone who would be willing to bring a puppy for me to the US.  It's a long shot question but if anyone knows of a traveller returning from Athens in the near future, please let me know so I can ask if they would be willing to bring a puppy for me.

As far as I know pups should have Rabies shots at 3 months.  At least that is the rule when exporting to an EEC country, and I was pretty sure that was the age for USA too, which is why when exporting we try to get them to go under that age.

Generally pups have to fly as Cargo in the Cargo hold.  Pups can go as Excess baggage if someone accompanies them(still in Cargo hold) but very few airlines allow them in the passenger cabin and there are strict limits as they are required to fit under the seat in a special carrier.  I have a couple taking a pup at 9 weeks for that reason (should still be under 5kg just we hope), but they found only Delta Airlines would allow it.
