Hi there, my bulldog is ready for mating but i dont know how much is the going rate. I have a bitch to breed him with but im not sure what the usual agreement is. The owner of the bitch told me £450 as he is not proven. Is this information right, as i paid £2000 for my boy and it seem a little cheap to get not even a quarter for breeding. Also why is it not possible to get pick of litter?

There's no reason for you not to ask for pick of litter if that's what you want. Make sure you get any agreement in writing, signed by both parties, before you go ahead.

I gather that bulldogs are not the easiest of breeds to mate, so I hope either you or the bitch owner has handled a bulldog mating before.

Another thing to remember is that you as well as the bitch owner will be morally responsible for the future of any puppies sired by your dog, and must be prepared to take them in for rehoming at any stage of their lives.

Just looked up 2 stud Bulldogs...both fees were £400-£500 .Unless your dog is a champion or proven producer of excellent stock I would think this is the going rate.
If this is right then no bitch owner in their right mind is going to give you pick of litter since they would be loosing hundreds of pounds!

the fee sounds about right to me. Some breeders charge a little more for a specialist handler to mate the dogs, and this can be included in the fee.
The best thing to do is go to a reputable breeder or stud owner who does all the health tests and who aims to breed from dogs which can mate and give birth as naturally as possible because if you use dogs which cant do this then you are perpetuating the lines of "man made" dogs that can have a lot of difficulty breeding.

TBH £450 is too much for an unproven unshown dog, when you can use proven champions for £500 and i really can't see anyone handing over pick of litter.
