Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Facial swelling after delivery?

A breeder friend of mine had to interrupt a phone conversation of ours tonight, because a breeder friend of hers called, having a problem with her bitch:  her bitch's face swelled after she delivered her puppies.  The woman I was talking with said this had happened to a couple of her bitches as well, and she had just given them a little Benadryl for it.  (I wouldn't think it's an allergic reaction to anything?, but I don't know.)  She asked me what I would do, and as I have never bred a dog or heard of this problem, I had no advice to offer.  I thought I would ask if any of you have ever had a bitch with facial swelling after delivery.  If so, what did you do to fix/curb it?  And, most importantly, do you know what causes it?  TiA!

hi, i have never had this happen to one of my girls, but if i did , i would take her to the vets asap !!! this is why breeding is not to be taken lightly !! you must be able to cover all eventualities , ie, vet fees !!  IMHO :D

I don't know if it is related at all, but my bitch develops blisters on her tongue and roof of her mouth after eating the afterbirths -happened with both litters.
