Topic Dog Boards / General / Spiral Spike

Good Evening everyone,

My maiden post on Champdogs, I am a member of several MBs but have at last cracked the cookie problem I had here !

I have a GWP called Boris, a highly energetic and very big for his size 2 and a half year old.

I went camping with him earlier in the year and tethered him with a spiral spike which he promptly bent in half and pulled out at the sight of duck. This was not a small spiral spke !

So do any of you have any thoughts on spiral spikes and tethering 'the beast' in general ?

Regards

Hello,
Welcome aboard. In my (limited) experience those spirals only work with some dogs. I had 2 Great Danes who would quite happily lay down tethered on 1 spiral but my Border Terrier would pull it out of the ground! I don't know much about GWP's but surely he will start to calm down.......in 5 or 6 years :-)

What about tying a long leash to a tree?

I guess it also depends on what ground you have stuck it in and how much it will move if the dog constantly goes round it, we have two and have never had any problems even when one stupidly went full pelt and nearly decapitated himself . (I shortened the wire soon after)

Hi Jeff

I heard pointers are eternally young !

My secret is an hour and a half in the woods in the morning, an hour in the woods in the afternoon and an hour and a half in the woods before dusk interspersed with throwing a ball and games.

Usually does the trick !

I suppose thats why the beast resents being tethered :-)

I never had a problem with those spike with my lab cross, so long as the spike was screwed right into the ground......  Failing that, there was always the tow ball on the car ;)

Hi there,

I own two Malamutes and also stake them out when we go camping. The spiral stakes are no good for large breed/strong dogs and anyone enquiring about stakes for our breed are always told to avoid them. I use a 2ft Galvanised Steel stake - this holds ours with no problem at all. I'll PM you with the website of the makers of them :)

Ice cosmos i own two danes and they are fine i have never had any problems i even bought the two twirlies at a dane show!!

Ah sorry - I am talking about dogs that are bred to pull approximately 13x their own weight :) If your dog doesn't pull or is not capable of pulling that kind of weight then I am sure the spiral stakes would be fine. However they are not at all advised for our breed :)

Glad to have helped :)

I can only comment from personal experience but the spirals are OK for large dogs, as long as they are as lazy as my Danes were! :-)
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 23.08.05 20:57 UTC
I've had Munsters that have bent them, and other Munsters that will sit quite happily on them (not literally  ;) )

I suppose it will depend on the dog.

Yes sorry - If your dog has no intention of pulling then a Spiral stakes would be fine - however this is not the case with our breed :) Though I am sure if a Dane wanted to go the Spiral stake would have no chance at holding them.

You are quite right, luckily mine were extremely lazy! :-)

I can 110% assure you that my dane at full pelt did nothing more than risk an injury to his neck!
But he wasn't bred to pull 13x his weight but as history states could bring a wild boar down but so far a twirly has defeated him roflmao.

Mmm, my 15kg staffie cross has bent a spiral spike.

Both lurchers are fine on them though.

A friend's flatcoat pulled one right out of the ground once.

Ice cosmos

Could you pm me as well with the info. Gabi has broken several spiral stakes and if she does it again we will be banned from the camp site.

Many Thanks
