Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Toy poodle bitch wont let stud mate her
- By Guest [au] Date 22.08.05 03:23 UTC
My toy poodle is on day 16 today and has a watery clear gooyish discharge, ive put her with the stud every day since day 11 but she still wants nothing to do with him, she is 20mths and on her 2nd season. the stud is very eager but the female nips at him and squeels when his willy touches her vulva. why would she be doing this, ive never experienced this before, my other female was all for it from day 10 till day 14 (i then seperated them till she had finished her season)

Is there still time for her to become pregnant?

Why would she be carrying on like this.?

thank you in advance for your answers.

Some bitches simply won't be mated or are very reluctant.  I have a Champion bitch on ehr second litter, but we had to try several times.  She had her first litter aft6er second time of trying, and only one mating where the dog was too quick for her, and once tied she couldn't do anything about it.  She was a mature almost 4 year old by then so it wasn't metal immaturity (which is another possibilitu).

We decided to try for a second litter and she woudln't have the sutd dog on any grounds.  This time we had the dog with ehr from the start of her season, and she was much better disposed to the whole idea, but wan't presenting herself well (though standing), and would decide to mount him instead, so now that she was willing I did have to hold heer still at the crucial moment as the dog was wearing himself out.

You bitch may not be ready yet, as some bitches can ovulate very late or she may have ovulated very early and you missed her altogether.

If she is this difficult next time I would ask myself how vital she is in your breeding plans, will not breeding from her loose you your line?  Is she so outstanding that herculean efforts need to be made to find out wehat the problem is.

If it is very important to breed from ehr then next time I suggest you have her premate tested every two days to pinpoint when she ovulates.  The tests should start about the 7th day and be done every second day while the reading is negative, once the reading shows ovulation imminent then the test has to be doen daily until ovulation occurs.  Then the best day for mating is 48 hours after ovulation and for two days after that.

If you still get no joy and you know you have the right time, the season after that you could try running ehr with the male throughout the season if the stud owner will let yu and hope that she warms to the idea.
