Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / DALMATIONS. are they good with cats??!

Hi, we have been researching different dog breeds for over a year now and have considered various breeds to include a labrador,  a bolognese, a newfoundland, a weimaranar, a  cavalier king charles spaniel and recently dalmations.  We have a very docile indoor ragdoll cat who is very affectionate and would like to get him a companion.   I have researched about dalmations and cannot seem to find any really useful info on them.  Could anyone please help.  Advice would be most welcoming on the message board.  (I have however read the breed guide on this site which I did find useful.)  Also if there are any books which anyone could reccommend?  Thank you

Hi! There's some basic information about dalmatians here - a good book is 'Dalmatians' by John Wholey and Gwen Eady. Basically, they're a very active, very sensitive and emotionally demanding breed who don't thrive without human company - not a breed to be left alone for long periods without becoming extremely destructive! They don't mature mentally till about 8 or 9 years of age; they shed hair continually, with a couple of huge snowstorm moults each year. They're usually fine with their own 'family' cats, but any others are purely for chasing!

I have (at present!) four dalmatians, so can answer most questions about what they're like to live with! If you like to Register you can ask away!
