Thanks for those of you who replied to my 'companion for a labrador' post.  In the end, we decided to get a cocker spaniel puppy, and are now the proud owners of a little blue roan 8 week old dog.  Our labrador has taken over the role of teacher and absolutely loves him already.  He's a real sweetheart!
