Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / castration

I have a three year old male Lab who is currently entire.  He is not used at stud and would never be.  I don't show.
He seems to be getting increasingly agitated when bitches around us come into season and the symptoms I am getting are:  Restlessness, keeps wanting to go out (goes to the front door several times day/night), he's particularly 'sniffy' and very strong on his walks. and wakes us at five in the morning, whinning and soft howls!  The worse time is later evening when he wants to go 'out'  - despite having had adequate exercise during the day!   My vet (and others) have suggested that I have him castrated to stop him getting so anxious but I don't want to put him through something that I have totally disagreed with (unless on medical grounds - i.e. testicular/prostate problems).  Has anyone experienced this and taken the step with an older dog?
