Cashie's obviously been dreaming up new and improved ways to show me up.  A couple of weeks ago he was playing with a German Shepherd pup in the park.  The pup got a bit overexcited and bit Cashie just below his shoulder.  I don't think for a minute the pup was being aggressive, I blame it on thin whippet skin.  Cashie didn't seem too bothered, he yelped once then went on playing.  The poor owner was really apologetic (as I'm sure we all would be in that situation) but it's just one of those things.  When we got Cashie home I clipped his hair with a pair of curved scissors so I could have a proper look.  It probably could have had one stitch, but it was borderline as it was a very superficial wound.  I don't think he'd stand still to let me put a stitch in and as we've run out of staples at work I decided to leave it as there's no way it's worth a GA.

A week or so later, his hair had started to grow back, and as a result of my shoddy clipping he looked a bit mangy.  I thought, he doesn't care what it looks like, it'll grow back.  Then I had a horrible morning, I woke up late, I had to take Cashie to work, it was pouring rain etc.  Cashie was sulking about being dragged quickly to the tube in the rain.  I got on the train and this incredibly loud-mouthed lady pushed through the carriage (in the middle of rush hour) and bellowed "I hope you're taking that dog to a vet."  I sort of laughed and said "Well funnily enough, I am, he's coming to work with me."  She then told everyone on the train that he was clearly starving, terrified and just generally abused (at this point Cashie's looking as pitiful as a whippet can look).  She told me that she intended to report me to the RSPCA.

I thought that the whole thing had gone far enough, and I was getting a bit annoyed so I said "Look this is silly, he's meant to look like that, in fact he's a bit tubby for a whippet, and he's perfectly happy."  I reached out to stroke him, and the little s*d gave his most horrified look and ducked under a chair!!  I've never been on the receiving end of so many hostile looks.  We ended up getting off at the next station.

If only he could be nominated for an Oscar :-)

Mine are bad enough in the park, running up to people to say hello and then shying off when they bend down to stroke them!! You can just hear them thinking 'why do those dogs shy away from people like that?' :-D

Ah bless him. He was probably picking up on your anger at her and thought it was aimed at him. I know how you feel, collies are experts at looking abused too. You were very controlled, I think I would have gone mad if someone had spoken to me like that about my dogs! :)
