Topic Dog Boards / Health / Loss of appetite after death?
- By Schiplab [gb] Date 12.08.05 11:26 UTC
A Neighbour as recently lost one of her 10 year old red setters, both were litter brothers.

The remaining dog as lost his appetite and she is worried for him.  Can anyone give advise on what she can do to tempt him eating again.

Many thanks

Give him time. When my dog died earlier this year, our staffie went through the same with loss of appetite and also everytime we went for a walk, he was totally lost without his best friend. For the 1st few days, I cooked him chicken and hand fed him as he didn't want to eat out of the bowl, he also didn't want to be alone and followed me everywhere. It does get better, but we spoilt sam a lot and gave him lots of affection and he soon came round.

Wish your neigbour luck and my condolenses.

Hi Schiplab,

It may also help if she juggles his normal day to day routine a little - perhaps changing the times he is exercised and putting in an extra walk.  Suggest also offering him his meals at a different time and also make the meals a slightly smaller quantity and with something unusual added for a few days - for eg. tinned sardines, cottage cheese or add a little warm chicken broth.

HTH, please keep us posted.  Regards, Teri :)

Thanks for the replies so far, the lady unfortunatly is disabled so is house bound the husband does shift work and is her carer and to be honest I don't think the dogs go for walks, so I don't think they are the healthest of dogs from that point of view but I do know they are very much loved and cared for.

I will offer her your suggestions and hope this will help get him feeding again.

On a slight aside, the Cinnamon Trust provide dog walkers (free of charge, volunteers) for disabled people. My sister has two fantastic dog walkers from the trust who know and adore her dog, and she gets excellent consistent exercise which my sister can no longer achieve. Just thinking of improving the dogs life!
