Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy being returned
- By Pedlee Date 11.08.05 09:00 UTC
Sadly it looks as if one of the pups I bred will be returning to me. The family he went to seem unable to cope with the normal sort of puppy behaviour (play biting, not wanting to be left, etc.), as well as the wife and teenage son becoming frightened of him, so will make a decision today whether to keep trying or return him to me (which is what I have recommended to them). I have also volunteered to visit them at home but don't hold out much hope that this will help.

Can anyone give me some advice about re-introducing the pup to the rest of my brood (2 male Goldies, Sussex Spaniel bitch, Dobermann bitch (the pup's mum) and the pup (bitch) I kept from the litter who is nearly 12 weeks old).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Karen,

I had one of my pups back for a sleepover (owners were away for a wedding) at 12 weeks and my dogs hardly reacted ;)  His mum checked him over to make sure he was one of hers and like you I have a litter sister who was thrilled to see him (read manic  )

I've also had one of the males overnight at almost 11 months and even that went easily - again mum checked him over, he got excited and jumped on her, she showed him a clean set of teeth and he decided to leave her alone :P but the other two enjoyed a new playmate and mum was 100% OK after a couple of hours.

At just 12 weeks I don't think it should be problematic, particularly as you have your own puppy there so he has someone of similar mental and physical abilities to wear down and shouldn't be annoying the older dogs much.  I'm sorry his home hasn't worked out - hopefully you will find him a wonderful new forever home and at least you're obviously caring and responsible enough to want to keep in touch and help through any problems.  Good luck, Teri

ps. forgot to say I just walked the pup straight into the house and let the others meet him in the hallway!  With the older pup I let them meet in the front garden first :)

Hi can you not let them meet in the garden one of my pups was returned last year and i didnt have a problem with my other adult dogs his mum was very pleased to see him the others just sniffed him then moved on.on the other hand my puppies owners phoned me to say they were finding him difficult and wasnt sure if they would keep him, I drove to their house with the money they paid for him and brought him back as i couldnt leave him where he really wasnt wanted
good luck

We had one of ours returned to us on our last litter at 11 weeks as the owners didnt realise they were going to be posted overseas!  They all excepted him back with no problems whatsoever.  I think the fact you still have a puppy would probably help a great deal.  I would personally give him a wash down with something then rub him all over with your bedding or something so that he smells of you when you bring him back.

Well he is back, and has fitted in fine - playing like mad with his sister.

Thanks for the advice.

Glad to hear it :)  Good luck with him - hope he finds a great new home soon!  Regards, Teri

Just think how lucky he has been returned now rather than as an out of control adolewscent who needs to be totally retrained before he could move on to a new home.
