Topic Dog Boards / General / Another Couple of Questions :)

Hi Guys,

Just another couple of questions lol!

Firstly i have taken into account what i have read from this forum regarding roasted bones and took deon's (12 month rottweiler) roast bones away, my mum then went to the butchers and got him some bones, but before giving him them ithought i would ask a couple of things:

1) is it ok to give him raw bones with bits of meat still attached or will this upset his tummy?
2) the bones i were given had really sharp edges and i dont fancy giving them to him, is there any sort of specific bone i should be asking for?

He has suddenly decided it will be a good idea to start ripping wall paper from the walls and chewing the corner of kitchen cupboards, how can i stop this? i have been toldby someone to rub vicks vapour rub into the wood, will this work or just smell my kitchen out?

Thanks for all the help and advice everybody has already given me!

John

Vicks works for me - you only need a thin layer and it lasts a few days before you have to renew.  The dogs just don't like the smell!  Good luck :)

Believe it or not the smaller bones that have not been cut are the best. Things like rib bones, rather than really big marrow bones. The meat that is left on the bone is the best bit :D

what about chilli oil? it doesnt smell but will give your dog a hot head (hot dog)

Hi John, the answer to your question really depends on the purpose of the bones.

If they are purely recreational, then the bigger the better, remove them when all the marrow and cartilage has been stripped, always supervise their use, ensure he does not resource guard and that he does not break his teeth.

If you are using them as food, then you need to be thinking about any bone with meat on ie drumsticks, wings, ribs etc etc etc

Vicks is a good solution however a better one would obviously be to provide an outlet for his ripping tendencies, ie the bones, buster balls which dispense food or stuffed kongs, in his case the black giant ones..............

Hi John,

Also you dont say if this chewing is when he is home alone or if it is when you are with him, like the other posters have suggested activity toys or bones are a great outlet. If it is when he is home alone it would more than likely be a stress related disorder.
Good luck with him, he sounds as though he's landed on his feet with you :-)

p.s. edited as i made a typo lol :D

Destructive behaviour is not necessarily stress related, quite often it is boredom  related................................

Very true Tohme, however boredom can sometimes lead to stress ...... well it does with me :-)
I just presumed with this dog it might be stress as he's a rescue who seems to have bonded well with his new owners &  not been in the new home for very long & if the chewing were happening when they were out then perhaps it may well be stress.
Unfortunately on posts we never get the full details otherwise the posts would be forever & a day long, well mine would pmsl :D
