Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Salukis in Scotland

Hi there,

I currently live near Edinburgh and after much deliberation as to which breed would suit me, I decided on a saluki. I am constantly on the go and would love a dog that can walk with me on my wandering (the not smelling or shedding very much and overall gorgeousness are added bonuses!). I don't think I'd be able to cope with an afghan hound in terms of grooming and the only borzoi breeders I can find tend to be in the south of England. I would be very willing to consider a rescued saluki or a new puppy. I was in contact with one breeder in Scotland but she has just sold her litter. I wouldn't want to show. All I want is a well loved pet to keep me company and able to exercise for long spells. Does anybody know of any reputable breeders in Scotland or northern England or of a rescue society that specialises in salukis in the north? I noticed that sometimes greyhound rescues have salukis for adoption but this is rare and again they tend to be too far south for me to travel (I don't have ready access to a car).

If anyone could offer me any help I'd be most grateful.
Thanks very much!

Hi & Welcome to the Forum :)

Try contacting NORTHERN SALUKI CLUB. Sec. Mrs Graham. Tel No: 01952 840259 who should be able to advise of litters currently available or possibly a youngster looking for a re-home.

Also the Scottish KC's show at Ingliston schedules them (not many classes however so wouldn't expect a large entry) and Hound day is on Sunday 28th August.  You may be able to make some contacts in the breed by going along there.

I appreciate you don't have your own transport but it can be worth travelling further afield to ensure you get the best puppy possible for health and temperament - no doubt doubt the secretary of the Breed Club will be able to advise best on this.

Good luck Teri :)

you often see saluki cross lurchers advertised, but if you are looking for a pure saluki a breed club or breed rescue would be your best starting point as i think this breed is fairly rare across the UK.

Quite popular at shows though.

Anne McDonald (Mabrooka), the top Saluki breeder is Scottish, maybe she still lives in Scotland.

The Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show is on at Ingliston later this month, it might be a good idea to get yourself along there on Hound day to see the dogs and the breeders.

Good Luck.
