Hi everyone,
I took my dog to the vets today as over the past few weeks, he has had the runs on and off, aswell as my other dog. The vet recommended changing to JWL but the adult one as he said that the food we are giving them is too rich. Their poo was green! We were feeding them on Beta puppy food sometimes mixed with freeflow mince.
As my puppys are only 5 months old, will they still grow etc ok as the adult one doesnt have as much protein in it etc?
Any advice/help on this will greatly be received.
Thanks
Hi. You didn't mention the breed of your puppy? Usually small breeds can be switched to adult food when they are six mths old, while medium breeds tend to switch to adult food when they are aprox 12 mths old. Large and giant breeds ten to switch to adult food when they are 18-24 mths old. All of this depends on the size, breed and age of dog. James well beloved has a junior food for dogs ageg 6-12 mthsold.I also feed James Well beloved to one of my dogs Julius a 12 mth old English Bull terrier(fed Junior performance). He has a touch of colitis and does extremley well on this food. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Sorry my dogs are English Bull Terriers, do you know roughly what weight they should be at 5 months of age? Im glad ive found someone who also has an EBT!
Cheers
Hi . At around 5 mths an english bull should be feed around 500-700grams of Junior food(James Well beloved Junior) When they reach 11mths this can be reduced to 300-400 grams and then you can start to change them onto the adult kibble where you should be feeding around 300grams. But all of this depends on the amount of exercise a dog recieves. 10mins of exercise for a 5 mth old bully is suffient!!
I show my bull terrier and I have just started agility training with him. Regarding the weight of the dog I cant remember what my bully weighed at 5mths. I know an adult bull terrier can be between 22-27kg but this all depends on the breeding of the dog. My boy has plenty of bone and weighs around 25 kg at 12mths old. Sorry I cant be of any more help!! What did your vet say??

Hi.
I didnt ask about the weight issue but i think they look a big skinny to be honest. Our boy is 20kg and our girl is just under 17kg. Do you know what age they stop growing?
thank you for the info, as i said its nice to speak to someone who has a bully!
As bluebell stated it is the quality rather than the quantity of the food that a young dog recieves, but bull terriers are munching machines and the guidelines I stated are approx what I fed my boy. A bull terrier is classed as a medium breed and doesnt tend to have the same growth spurt as a large breed dog. By the time your Bull terrier reaches 12 mths old he should be near his adult weight and height. Bull terriers tend to spring their rib around this time too. They grow wide like tanks!!
To be honest after my first lab was growing way too fast on puppy food, I dont really use it. Mine stay on it long enough to get aclimatised to their new home and finish a bag, normally about 8 to 12 weeks, then on to a good quality adult food. Have you ever seen a wild dog go out and feed puppy food? The most they do is find bits that are easy to chew or part digested for very small pups. I think the key is that they get good quality digestable protein rather than the quantity. I have also found that my dogs tend to be calmer once they come off of puppy food.
