We are interested in breeding our boxer and would like some advice on what the rules of breeing are and how we go about it.
There are a number of important factors to consider before breeding from your bitch.
These include the health of the bitch-a bitch should not be breed from until at least 2-2.5 yrs old
A reputable breeder will health test both bitch and ensure that the stud dog has been heart tested too. Grade 0-1 is best!!-heart testing in boxers is vital as they are prone to heart mumurs!!
Does the bitch/stud have a good temperament??
Remember insurance companies dont always cover breeding purposes so if a bitch needs an emergency c/section have you got the available funds??
Have you got the time to supervise the bitch once the pups are born?
Have you got the space for puppies-a boxer can have up to 10 in a litter? Bitches need a quiet space to raise their litter?
Will you vet new owners to ensure pups recieve a good home?
Will you be prepared to take back any pup should the new owners circumstances fail?
Will the pups be health tested-in the case of a white boxer being born can be prone to deafness??
These are just some of the questions that need to be asked before breeding is considered.
I hope I have been of some help.
A list of heart tested dogs is available on the web http://www.boxerunderground.com/uk/
Hi guest before you even consider breeding your girl go to the breeding board and read Should I offer my pet dog at Stud?
then consider if you still wish to go ahead and breed from her, but also wheigh the cost of a stud dog and a possible C Section then looking after a litter of puppies for almost eight weeks, then finding the puppies life long homes and if a home doesnt work out for whatever reason being prepared to take the puppy back. Or you could talk to your dogs breeder and ask them their opinion they will be able to advice you.
not trying to put you off just outlining some of the points to consider before you put yourself through it and the saftey of your bitch.
If you want another Boxer far easier, less stressful and cheaper to buy one in than breed it yourself...
Trust me, I've done it both ways :D
Firstly you need to get the health testing done on your bitch, the minimum requirement is that she should pass
heart testing for aortic stenosis. To do this she must pass with either a grade 0 (best score) or 1 to be considered
clear for breeding purposes. This testing must be done by a vet that specialises in cardiology.
This test is down at breed shows or at the cardiologist's surgery so therefore depending where this is done costs
can vary from £7.50 -£45 per dog.
The bitch must not be bred from til she's at least 18 months old (as per guidelines from Boxer breed council). It is not ethical nor fair on the bitch to breed from her every season. In some cases the KC may refuse to register the pups if there have been pups born
from the same bitch within 12 months.
A good book to read is the book of the bitch (costs approx £9.99) this is most breeders 'bible'. It will let you know of
what you can expect etc - but please note not all bitches have read the book or take much notice of it, LOL so it may not
be a textbook pregnancy or labour/whelping.
There can also be ethical code of membership for each breed club you belong to so you may want to check these too.
Also if you want your pups docked you will need to be a member of the council of docked breeds before your pups are born
and they will supply names of vets that will dock your pups. If you don't wish to have the puppies docked then you may need
to join an organisation called the anti docking alliance as this is where people that want undocked pups go to find breeders
that have undocked pups.
With white puppies you may need to get these checked out to make sure that they aren't deaf.
Not all white pups are deaf &/or blind but it can happen. How will you cope with the additional needs of these pups.
Best suggestion is to go along to your local Boxer shows, get to know some Boxer people see what Boxers you like and what lines (bloodlines) they come from do they suit your bitch...or do you decide to wait and buy a puppy in from these bloodlines instead.
All I can say is when I did breed my litter my puppy in effect ended up costing me £1500, when at the time I could have bought
a promising pup (I show my Boxers) for approx £500-600. Also the emotional strain of trying to keep a puppy alive for 3 days really took it's toll especially when I lost her after all the effort I'd put in :(
Wish you the best of luck.
