Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How long to walk a puppy?

I've read this on the boards somewhere but despite searching I can't find it.  How long (as a rule of thumb) should I be walking my puppy?  He's an extremely boisterous 5 month old schnauzer.  we've erred on the side of caution as read that too much exercise is not good for them, but as I right he's tearing round the living room (this has been going on since seven, please god make him stop) and the temptation to start walking tomorrow at 7am and not stop til we both collapse is becoming overwhelming... (joke obviously  ;))

Anyone?

Hi, the rule of thumb is '5 minutes per month of age', so 25 minutes a day for your wee boy.

Well, on the old 5 mins per month rule this would equate to a walk of 25 mins!

If he is tearing around the place, bouncing off walls, well, maybe you could say 25 mins wall bouncing, then 25 mins walking twice a day!!!

I've always used the 5mins per month as WALKING time - not playing in the garden/acting the fool/training to sit/stay/come/bounce the ball time!

I don't know that this is the answer you wanted - but it sounds as if you need and extra energy boost yourself , in order to keep up with your pup - can't help there, I'm afraid ! :D :D :D  Good luck!!!!

A couple of 25-minute walks is the general rule. What training are you doing? Brainwork is tiring for them, more so than physical exercise - which just gets them wanting more ... and more ... and more ...
