Topic Dog Boards / Health / Molly -diahorrea after spaying
- By carol99 [gb] Date 04.08.05 16:11 UTC
Molly was spayed on Tuesday, today she has bad orange coloured diahorrea and seems very subdued.  I've rang the vet and they said the anesthetic shouldn't really have caused this and to give her a light diet (but I have done today anyway, tuna and a few complete meal this morning, and chicken and rice this afternoon - only very small portions).  She ate it but not heartely. If no better tomorrow to take her in.  Anyone else experienced this, I'm worried in case there's anything more sinister going on.  Oh, she is also stretching her neck out from time to time, she's done this since she came home.  She's not going to the water bowl, but I've been holding it up for her and she's been drinking and she's not been sick.  There's a little shaved area on her neck as well as on her paw as if they have administered something.

Also, forgot to ask, tonight when I put her t-shirt on should I put smooth some vaseline over the wound?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 04.08.05 16:34 UTC
No, leave it dry.

The shaved area on her neck would be from when they took a blood sample from the vein.

No, wounds should be left clean and dry, bacteria prefers warm and wet.
The neck stretching may be because her throat is a little sore from the tubing down it during her anaesthetic.

Have you checked to see if she has a temp and how does the wound look ?

I haven't got a thermometer, but the wound is clean, dry but looks a little swollen and an area of it is red.  I'll keep it clean and dry as you have said. I've just been a walk with Max and when I got back she greeted me and was happy to see me but she's crashed out again now.  I don't like the fact she's got an upset tum because it's not usual for her.

If the wound is clean and dry I then that is good :)

Keep her on rice and chicken or tuna for a day or two and some live yogurt :)

If she is still a bit off take her to the vet for a check up but I am sure she will be fine. :)

Let us know how she gets on :)

Thanks Lucy, I know I'm probably being a bit thick, but when you say live yoghurt, is there any particular sort you would buy from the supermarket?
- By LJS Date 04.08.05 19:36 UTC
Have a look and most supermarkets/shops will sell natural bio active yogurts :)

Thanks, I'll get some in the morning, I just wasn't sure if it was the same sort as we would eat.  I'll let you know how things go.

You want plain live bio yoghurt I get the organic milk version for the dogs & the soya version for me ;)

Hi Carol did the vet prescribe Metacam its a anti inflammatory, my bitch had it after she was spayed for four days and i was informed to watch out for any sickness/ diahorrea. Just a thought as this may be the cause also my bitch wouldnt drink out of her bowl i had to hold it up for her. I hope she is ok now plz pm me if you like
regards pollyxxxxxx

Vet didn't prescribe anything.  I asked if she would need any more painkilllers, but he said they had given her a long lasting one.  Ditto about the water bowl, I'm holding it up for Molly too. Not sure what 'pm me' means. She's still got an upset tum, but the last time she went it was forming just a little.  She seems a bit brighter tonight.  I will see how she is in the morning, if not much improvement I will take her back to the vets - better safe than sorry.  I think we could all do with a good nights sleep tonight, so I hope her tum settles down.  Going to put her t-shirt on again and have her with me in  my bedroom.  Thanks a lot.

Molly seems brighter this morning, she slept through the night and the upset tum seems to have settled (she's not even 'been' this morning!).  Wound looks a bit raised and red so I will keep my eye on it.  She ate a little breakfast.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Thats good news

If you think about it she has had a major operation & had her intestines moved around so no wonder she has a bit of an upset tummy

As she is drinking you can put some glucose(sugar) & a tiny(& I mean tiny)pinch of salt in her water which will help to keep her hydrated. I always have some B Sorb in as it's a handy way of getting essential nutrients into your dog. Plus my dogs love the bio yoghurt even the newbie baby

Thanks Moonmaiden.  I know she's picking up now 'cos she showed a lot of interest in my elevenses - she loves digestive biscuits!

Hi carol so pleased to hear that Molly is now on the mend
- By Isabel Date 05.08.05 14:24 UTC
You will often find as the days go on the flesh around the sutures puffing up and going rather red but this is really just a "foreign body" reaction and is not the same as infection as long as the area does not start to look sticky or grey and moist it should be OK but of course if you are in any doubt ask the vet or vet nurse to have a peek for you.  When are the sutures coming out, 10 days? You will see a much happier dog once they are out I'm sure :)  As this swelling goes on it can get more uncomfortable so watch out for her starting to mither the sutures more but I see on another post JG is now printing Tshirts so you can always discuss with her a suitable caption to be worn during day time hours for the fashionable convalescent :D

Hi Isabel, I've just read your post, and thankyou, because I was getting a bit concerned at the swelling, although Molly seems fine now in herself, and you have explained what it is, so that has put my mind at rest. The redness has lessened and she seems very perky.  I think the problem now she is feeling a bit better is going to be keeping her calm and quiet over the next few days! - she;s not much more than a pup herslelf really and loves to play with Max - stitches come out on Saturday.
