Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / feeding raw meats and veg??
- By benjismum [gb] Date 02.08.05 15:08 UTC
i was just wondering if there was any major do's and don'ts about feeding raw meats.
is there any meats that should be avoided and what about fatty meats and the skin of meats?

i was also wondering about storage of meats. is it ok to freeze and should the meats be compleatly defrosted before being fed?

also just wondering about veg what veg can and cant you feed and is it ok to feed raw veg or should it be cooked.

thankyou.

You can feed any raw meat from any species you like.
Fatty meats and skins are fine. (Unless of course your dog suffers from pancreatitis)
You can freeze meat.
You can thaw it or not as the case may be.
All vegetables bar onions are ok.  If you feed raw you must pulverise etc in a blender otherwise the goodness is not available to the dog. You may cook as well.

Just to add to tohme's post if you feed raw you MUST include a proportion of raw meaty bones....about 40%.These include chicken carcasses and wings, rib bones, pigs trotters etc

Archer, do you give your dogs the pigs trotters whole or cut them up?

I have never had a problem with feeding pork either, I feed pigs trotters whole, they love the toe nails! :D

Yep whole here too...and the toenails are the most prized bits always eaten first!!

Not really an expert but i feed my dog on raw meat and veg as advised by her breeder and the veg she told me to avoid were any nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers) i think a lot of people give potatoes cooked but i am just mentioning raw and info as in my puppy pack also any fruits such as apples pears strawberris bananas etc are good to give your dog raw except i believe grapes, but other people on here may well feed their dogs nightshade veggies and it may be fine to do so just a tip i was told by a lady who has done a course and has fed her dogs on barf for a very long time.HTH,hope i havent stepped on anyones toes.

Hi 1maximillion, I think most people on here will agree about the grapes, and potatoes are fine if they are cooked :)

If you or your pet suffers from arthritis then it may be advisbale to refrain from eating those vegetables that belong to the nightshade family such as tomatoes, peppers and potatoes and aubergines,  as these are believe to aggravate the condition etc but if arthritis is not a problem then neither are the vegetables, although personally I do not feed potatoes.  I do feed tomatoes though.

Grapes are definitely a no no.

IME I've found that the skin on poultry (we've only tried chicken and turkey though) gives my dog terrible wind and IT'S BAD!!!!
