Hello.I have a 10.5 month Staffy bitch.Over the last couple of weeks there have been some days when she does`nt really eat at all. I don`t think it`s her food because she wolfs it down every other day.Is she just taking a break? Thanks

Has she had a season yet.  One of mien woudl go very picky around the time of her seasons.  I ahve also had them when young not fussed over food and skip the odd days.  they grow out of this and once anorexic ones become chow hounds in later years :D

I have a 5 year old toy poodle who is not a 'regular' eater. He will miss a complete meal then miss breakfast! But the next evening will wolf it down. I think that whatever is 'normal' for each dog is normal if that makes sense!

Hi Spike, my staff often does this too, especially in the summer.  I think it is just to do with the heat and if she isn't running about so much she won't use up or need as much energy.  I'm the same when I'm on holiday in a hot country and can't be bothered eating.

Hi Spike

I went through something similar. My male Staffie is 11 months now. I posted a topic on this site called 'Soxy wont eat his dinner'. Have a look in the search facility for the post. I got lots of useful advice.

Dont worry though. Sox does this all the time. Just yesterday I realised that he hadnt eaten since the night before. This meant he had gone from Tuesday breakfast time until this morning with nothing! Today he wolfed it down - 3 times!

He regularly does this, about every three weeks but hes still bright eyed and has a great coat and full of energy. All the time he doesnt eat he is still pooing too so it shows you how much he has on board to keep him going. It is mostly the heat and you will probably notice her drinking more so she will feel full from the water and therefore need to eat less.

I know its a worry but as long as shes ok in herself and doesnt go more than a few days then dont panic she'll soon be eating everything in sight.

One great tip that I got for hot weather feeding and I can guarantee she will love, boil up some chicken(it can be drum sticks, left over carcus or chicken breasts - if you use anything with bones in make sure you seive it through and take the bones out) boil it until it breaks down nicely. When some of the water has gone and any bones have been removed, pour it into ice cube trays and freeze. You can either give her a few a day to cool her down (they are crumbly not too hard like ice)or pop one over her dinner and let it defrost a little so its a bit like gravy but still slightly frozen. She will love you more than ever.

Just out of interest, how much excercise does she get and what are you feeding?
