Hello
We breed miniature wire-haired dachshunds and, like all dogs, they are good with children if children respect them. Just because they are small doesn't make them any different to a big dog. They will not tolerate being pulled at or disturbed if they want to sleep. But generally, all ours love to play and are very friendly. It is always best to go and have a look at a breeders stock and see how they are with people. We always invite prospective puppy owners to come and meet the gang, even if we are not planning a litter for a while. I have found that our male is a lot more tolerant than the bitches and less moody, However, he does bark a lot more than the girls. With regard to back problems, we have been fortunate in that only one of ours has ever had a problem and she got better without having to resort to an operation. Avoiding stairs and not keeping a dachshund too fat are sensible things to do but even so, sometimes they do develop back problems. Having said that, ours all go on the moor for a good 2 hours a day and are out working most days throughout the winter and it hasn't affected their backs at all. In fact, they have more energy than our spaniels and will keep going in really tough terrain. Good luck with your search. All the dachshund breed clubs have web sites that have useful information on them.
hi i have a minture long dacs and and shes great with the kids,i have a 8mth old son and a 5yo daughter. weve experienced no problems with her altho wen we first got her she did snap at my 8yo nephue as she was trying to get awy from him under the table and he followed. my daughter has respect for dogs even tho she is only 5,she knows wen megs asleep she isnt to desturb her and not to pick her up. i think they do tend to be better with older children . but as long as your child learns to respect the dog they would be fine! dacs are loverly little dogs very loyal. x ide never be withought a dacs now they are very addictive! :)
