My border collie, Murphy, was hit by a car that shattered his elbow. Pins & plates were inserted which didn't work so had to be removed. Jagged bone within the elbow then opened up the wound which won't heal as it's right on his elbow, gets bumped every time he lies down. Another operation was performed that pulled fresh skin around to the elbow and the sharp bone was filed down. Yet again an open wound has appeared (you can see the bone in the wound) 10 days after the op and the thick bandage cast removed. The vet thinks that amputation is now the only solution. Murphy still uses the leg as it seems the original bone problem is healing, but the recurring open wound may lead to a lost leg. Can anyone suggest a solution or offer advice on healing an open wound on a pressure point such as an elbow? We are cleaning the wound and bandaging it daily.  Any advice would that could help save his leg would be most welcome.

Long shot - maybe the vet wouldn't like it, but I would use it myself - bees wax ointment -

2 oz  Beeswax
2oz RosemaryRosemary infused olive oil
1 oz Calendula Petal infused olive oil
1 oz Plantain infused olive oil
1 oz St. John's Wort infused olive oil
1 oz  Comfrey infused olive oil

Melt all together til beeswax is melted then add:

6 drops Vitamin E
5 drops Pine Needle Essential Oil
5 drops Chamomile Essential Oil
5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

*quick infusion-7oz olive oil, 1oz each herb heat for 1-3 hrs* DO NOT BOIL

Carnuba honey is supposed to be good for healing as well.

Thanks Jo, that's quite a potion! We'll try and source the ingredients for your solution and see if it works. We're outside the realms of traditional vetenery medicine so anything that can help save his leg is welcome.

Manuka Honey is great, I bought some from that website when my Dad had stomach ulcers while coping with two major operations. It really helped him.

You can buy M H dressings (they're even used by the NHS) or use it straight from the jar. :-)

I know its not on the same scale but my lab split his tail and it wouldnt heal (he kept wacking it!), was going to have it amputated but managed to get it to heal with Aloe. It can be taken either internally or externally and works a treat for most tissue healing even in difficult places. I normally buy the gel and it is easily available at health food shops such as Holland and Barret. Good luck. Bluebell
