My bitch is on day 8 of her season and the dog next door seems very keen to mate with her, although I don't think she is quite ready yet.  My male dog (the bitches father) does not seem all that interested in his daughter, just a bit curious, could it be that he will not want to mate with her as he senses it's his daughter or am I living in cloud cuckoo land, will all of a sudden he wake up to it. Has anyone had any experience of their male father dog not wanting to mate with his offspring.

I would keep your bitch away from her father you do not want that mating to happen EVER.
Dogs dont care about father to daughter or brother to sister matings so PLEASE be careful.

Cloud cuckoo land I'm afraid :d  He will definitely mate with her when the time comes.  THey need to be seperated now.  You've not left them alone during the night I hope?  Bitches can be mated on their 8th day and have pups.

My bitches sleep in their cage at night, so yes they are kept apart.  I will make sure that the male dog is kept away from her.  Thanks.

Thanks - I will make sure they are kept well apart, I was going to do that anyway, but was just interested to hear if anyone had known if this can occur.

can i ask why would you want to mate father with his daughter? wouldnt that increase the risk of having puppys with deformities :( ! ive never bred so it may be ok,but thats not something ide do if i was ever gonna breed my bitch.isnt the line breeding abit to close?
- By ClaireyS Date 29.07.05 14:06 UTC
I dont think the OP is saying they want the father to mate with the bitch more that they dont want him to and are hoping he wont be interested and therefore they wont have to separate them - that was how I read it anyway :)
- By jeanturner [gb] Date 29.07.05 14:10 UTC
Yes, that's right, I have no intention of mating father with daughter.

Expereienced dogs often don't waste their time getting het up over a bitch that isn't ready.  Next doors dog on the other hand may not be expereinced so anything remotely smeling of bitch in season will have him excited. :D

BTW being in a crate will not necessarily prevent a mating
- By Chocaholic [gb] Date 29.07.05 18:47 UTC
I took it that the OP was confused that her own dog isn't interested and the one next door is therfore is she ready or not???
Anyway regardless agree with what everyone else has said, but you could always try premate testing and you should start now, in fact with it being the weekend day 11 would be Monday which would probably be too late. Are you in contact with the stud dog owner??? if so I would get your bitch over and see what he thinks.

Well I have to say I'm confused too - in an earlier posting the dog next door was one of bitch's puppies, and was your bitch not mated in May?
- By husky [gb] Date 29.07.05 19:57 UTC
Don't think the OP wants to mate the bitch at all, reading earlier posts, the bitch is still a puppy.

Jenp :-) i think it was the whippet that she mated in May :-D
- By JenP Date 29.07.05 20:19 UTC
Ah.. - I said I was confused :D

What is it with you lot.  I do not intend mating my puppy bitch until she is at least 2 years old.  Her mother was mated last August and had 5 puppies in October.  All I wanted to know was if my male dog would be interested in mating with his daughter, as he was not taking much notice of her and the dog next door was.  I have no intentions of mating father with daughter and will be keeping them apart.  It seems to me that people think I am asking this question because I want to mate my puppy bitch.  What do you thank I am.  I have only bred one litter before and was just asking a simple question.

Hi Jean,

hope you don't think my post implies that you were thinking of mating your pup, I was just pointing out to people that you'd never said anything about any mating, and from your earlier posts I guessed it was your pup in season, though you haven't said that on this thread.

good luck keeping them apart:-)
- By Chocaholic [gb] Date 30.07.05 16:21 UTC
I didn't know she was a puppy as I haven't read previous threads ;-)
- By LucyD [gb] Date 30.07.05 17:34 UTC
Sorry jean, in your original message you don't mention the age of the bitch, so although I read it that you didn't want to mate the bitch, I can see where the confusion arose!  :-)

"although I don't think she is quite ready yet"

The above comment did make it sound as though you were waiting for her to be ready.  Thank you for clarifying the situation.

People on these boards only have the best interests of the animals at heart and it isn't always easy to glean all the information from a first post on a thread.

hiya every one i have a  bitch we went to mate her and she did not tie. what early signs can i look for if she is pregnant plez reply
- By jeanturner [gb] Date 16.08.05 15:53 UTC
I found that my bitch was sick a few weeks into her pregnancy, no much though.  The signs usually appear leading up to about the 3rd to 4th week.  You will find that her teats will become swollen, although my bitch did have a phantom pregnancy with these signs.  Usually they begin to notice about the 5th week and then from then on you will notice them putting on weight and eating like fury.  The puppies begin to move around about the 7th week.  Good luck and keep me posted.  My bitch is due to be mated on her next season.
