Hi can I just warn everyone about the dangers of dogs eating sweetcorn. I lost my beloved Bull Terrier on tuesday after he got hold (unknown to me) of a swwetcorn husk and it blocked his intestine. Despite 2 xrays and 5 days of vet care I had to allow him to be put down, his whole system just shut down, and nothing showed up on xray or any of the blood tests. Needless to say I am devastated and feel incredibly guilty as he showed no symptoms until the last 2 hours before I took him to the vets. This stuff is deadly, please take extra care when having bbq`s etc,Id hate anyone else to suffer as I am now doing.

I panicked like made when Missy swallowed a sweet corn husk, every one said I was stupid, of course she'd digest it - and true, we never saw it again....... But I read in the NCDL paper today about just the same incident, and sadly that dog also died :(

our vet told us that dogs love the stuff, certainly i`d have never thought twice about it even if Id seen him with it, he was a 7 stone bull terrier for gods sake, it was a peice of veg, should have been no contest. Even after they operated, the vet expected him to recover but it was like his whole sytem just shut down, ive never experienced anything like it, and as I said, he showed no symptoms until 2 hours before i took him to be checked which was when he started vomiting. Bullies are terrible for eating rubbish and my fatboy was no exception, just he didnt get away with it this time.

So sorry to hear of your boy. I know of a Bernese who died in this way too some years ago.
Julie
So sorry to hear about your loss.
We very nearly lost our boy a number of years ago with the same thing, luckily our Vet found it by scan and was able to remove it safely. Like your poor lad his system began to shutdown, but with great veterinary care they managed to pull him through.
If we have sweetcorn now I make sure that it never ever is put anywhere but straight into the dustbin outside, so that the dogs can't get to the husks. I am paranoid about it.
Yes its the hard centre core of the sweetcorn cob.
According to my Vet, this is so hard and takes so long to digest that it will pass through the stomach partly digested and into the intestines, which causes the blockage.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I didn't realise that sweetcorn could do this.
My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Thnaks to everyone for all your lovely thoughts, my fatboy certainly is free but he will always be a massive part of my life, I used to joke that his thieving would be the end of him but little did I guess...........oh well thats what bull terriers where born to do I suppose, only one thing better than an extra snack and that was if the snack was nicked!!
