Occasionally my parson russell bitch has a very strong fishy smelling clear discharge, she did this the other day when she was upside down having her tummy rubbed on my lap! I was wearing shorts so it went down my leg.. whoo it stunk! she was unperturbed except by the fact that I had dumped her and rushed upstairs like a rocket to wash it off! It does not seem to last- what is it - anal glands ? no sign of any irritation or other problems visible.

Hi,
Usally fishy smell is an infection.

It could be anal glands altho I usually find that they have a rather metallic smell but I suppose different dogs can produce different smells! The alternative could be that she hasn't been cleaning herself enough, sometimes one of our girls has a fishy smell and we simply wash her bits in a mild soap solution and the smell instantly goes. Make sure you rinse her throughly after tho :)

How long has the smell and discharge been there? Possible pyo?

I would suspect anal glands some dogs release them when they get excited or stressed.

My top suspect would be the anal glands too :) but a trip to the vet might be wise to be sure and if we are right you can ask them to show you how to empty them. Then think about adjusting the diet, probably with more fibre, to facilitate their regular emptying when the bowels are moved and prevent another build up in future and the possibility of impaction or infection developing.
She has only done it a couple of times in over a year, she was due for a season, but no sign, it all seems ok now- she is going to the vets next wednesday so I will ask the vet then. She is on the BARF diet, and sometimes eats grass but never seems to have any bowel problems unless she has eaten bits of kebab off the pavement before I catch her!
She might have an infection as she has been weeing on the carpet, which she doesnt do normally.
