Barry Eaton is a bit of a 'deaf dog' specialist - do a google search, I'm sure he has an online article on training deaf dogs.....
The Vibrating collar ( not an Ecollar or citronella ) it vibrates so's to get the dogs attention, for use with hand signals, you'd need to teach the dog it is a possative ( a nice thing ) As advised Barry Eaton is very good & has a deaf dog website.
HTH's a little
Interestingly, Barry Eaton's not that keen on the vibrating collar, but he has done an excellent book called "hear hear!" about how to train a deaf dog based on his own experiences :)

yes, Barry Eaton put me off the vibrating collar too. His book is really useful :) If you do a search on here on deaf dogs there are a few websites too.

speaking from much experience the vibrating collar is a remarkable tool..and the only way to get the dogs attention reliably at a distance when the dog is not looking at you ..the motor is the exact same motor as a cell phone on vibrate mode..i have trained literally hundereds of dogs with these and they produce dramatic results
Barry did give a good reason for not using it for a deaf dog; unfortunately I can't remember what it was :p

He said to me that a deaf dog could ignore that the same as a hearing dog can ignore you voice, so you are better of training it properly (ie getting it to keep an eye on you) also he said if the dog goes in water or it rains then it would stop working :)
That's it, it's all coming back :P

Hi - I know Gill Minter has had experience training a deaf dog. She will always pop into her forum and answer questions. Do go and have a look - not sure if there is anything specific on deaf dogs.
