Hi, different people will have different answers for this one.  I believe that dogs (and bitches) need the hormones produced by their bits in order to mature and develop into an adult dog which does not have 'puppyish' features.  So, imo, I wouldn't have him done until he were at least 18 mnths. hth

Hi Cazzie,

I'd agree with other poster too :)  Hormones are as necessary for physical and mental development in animals as they are in humans.   With a larger breed such as yours, I'd wait until he was a *minimum* of 18 months.

Hi Cazzie,
I personally would not have any dog neutered young. I think you should leave it as long as you can!
Is there a  reason why you want him neutered?

This article is a reasonably well balanced one if you want to consider the pros and cons.

thanks for the article it was very useful,,

my main reason for wanting my pup neutered is that i have 2 males and 2 bitches all entire i was considering having the girls spayed but after speaking to my vet and finding that spaying a bitch is far more expensive than a male i decided to have the boys done as my cash flow is not altogether great at the moment .. im willing to wait until he is old enough and send him to stay with family when the girls are in season until the time comes to have him done .. thanks for all the advice :)

If you have 2 male dogs, do you intend to get them both neutered?  At the moment their own natural levels of testosterone will be keeping them 'different' and helping one to respect the other, if you neuter them both you will reduce the testosterone levels to zero, and with this, they will become more equal, and therefore more likely to resrt to physical means to maintain their hierachy.......

I had always assumed the opposite Digger, and certainly the opposite is true in my case. I have two adult borzoi males who used to fight all the time, the least little thing could spark it off. Since both have been neutered there has never been a cross word between them. They live in harmony with each other, cuddle up on the sofa together etc - they still hate dogs outside their pack but that's another story. Just my opinion but I have found that neutering both has made for a lovely peaceful household :)
