Can anybody please explain the basics of a low purine diet, in relation to feeding a dalmatian.
Cheers !

It's a long and complicated subject! Google is helpful at finding articles such as
this and
this, to get you started!

Basically these dogs should have sufficient protein from white meat sources which are lower in purines than red meat sources. I would feed at least 50% chicken or turkey as the main source of protein, together with vegetables and bones to form the remainder. Lamb can be fed sometimes for a change.
Do not feed a dry food diet and do not feed a prescription diet. The dog must always have access to water [all dogs should but especially so in this case]. If you feel the dog is not drinking enough then add vegetable water or even tap water to the food.
Salt should be avoided so do not make gravy etc with any proprietary gravy mix. Do not give brewers yeast.

Hi
You need to stay away from foods high in purines.
The Dalmatian Research Foundation have a low purine diet which consists bascially of vegetables, oil and rice with some added cottage cheese. This is ony for adult dogs though, not puppies or pregnant/lactating bitches.
I always feed mine on James wellbeloved as it is one of the lower protien foods. My dogs coats and well being are very good on this diet. i do in addition feed raw tripe of sausages with the food. I tried the barf diet and it didnt work for me but a lot of people have success on it.
