My dog had big op today. Does anyone have any bright ideas for invalid food, as in, what goes best in the liquidiser? Recipes appreciated. Vet said anything soft is ok.
Thanks.

The best thing for post op feeding is live yoghurt with Slipper Elm food/Tree Bark Powder available from Dorwest.
Failing that live yoghurt and manuka honey.
Easily digestible.
If you wish to detox the liver from anaesthetic, milk thistle once a day for 5 days would be useful.

HI SCRAMBLED EGGS ARE GOOD, OR BOILED RICE/ CHICKEN MIX yOU SHOULD'NT GO WRONGE WITH EITHER . p
Thanks. She's even vomiting plain water at the moment (going back to vet today) :-(, so it'll be a while before we even get to the yogurt stage but that seems like a good idea.

Oh dear I hope they can help settle things down for you very soon. You are right to take her back as she could soon dehydrate in the warm weather. What surgery has she had because, obviously, any surgery to the digestive track needs more care over introducing diet that other ops which just require getting over the sluggishness of digestion caused by anaesthesia although any surgery to the abdomen can involve moving the bowels about which can also cause the temporary loss of normal peristaltic movement in the bowel.
Gatric or bowel surgery is generally nursed with a very slow introduction of water first ie 30mls an hour until you are sure there is good bowel absorbtion going on when it can be gradually built up to introducing a little light diet.

Hi Lillith,
sorry to hear how things are going but glad you're going back to the vet today. Isabel is right about the fluids, it's important that she gets them but only in very small quantities.
While there, ask your vet if a veterinary "convalescence diet" would be a more appropriate starting point when you can give more than water - Walthams (and probably other major manufacturers) do a liquid food diet (similar to a soup) which is often given to patients recovering from surgery that involves the G/I tract or who are overly weakened by any invasive procedure.
Good luck, hope you can give us a positive update. Teri :)
She's had a piece of bowel removed and don't worry, I've got all the information on how to care for her and have already spoken to the vet about maybe putting her on a drip because of the vomiting.
I was thinking ahead really. I hope when the time comes, she'll take the commercial liquid food because I'm useless at preparing food. I think even I can manage yoghurt though!
Thanks for your kind words - I'll let you know how she progresses.
My dog was put to sleep. Tests showed that she had a nasty form of cancer and she was really suffering.
Thank goodness it is over for her.

I'm so very, very sorry Lillith. Thinking of you both,
God bless, Teri x

That is so sad. She is out of pain now, may she run free at Rainbow Bridge.
Take care
