I know all the Cavaliers I have had(all males)were all entire when I got them at 8 weeks & had been entire before this time.
When I check puppies I don't make big deal of it & don't check very often(which can cause testicles to be withdrawn into the body as happened to a beardie that when abroad) I do it as part of the table training & whilst baiting them into a stand I very very gently place one hand under the bum & feel this helps to get them used to being sexed by judges as well. I also never allow anyone at ringcraft try to check them until they are totally happy with being handled on the table either
My vets know better than to check them-a vet did this to a friends dog & I had a h*ll of a job training hiim that he wsn't going to be mauled about everything he was on a table. He was never really comfortable on the table & i didn't show him very much. I asked my main vet why he didn't check my dogs when they were puppies & being jabbed & he told me he never sexed small puppies & if they had any non entire puppies presented under a year old he & the other vets told the owners gently check once a month & bring the puppy back if they were not down by a year old & only at that stage would any operation etc be considered for the retained testicle
He always allows toy breeds longer as in his 30+ yers of experience they can descend later than bigger dogs
He has never seen any case of a retained testicle becoming cancerous before a male is mature
