Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennelling After Effects

Wonder if anyone can give me advice on the after effects of kennelling.

We have now put our dog into kennels twice, first time just for 2 nights and this time for 4 nights. On both occasions after picking him up he has toiletted excessivly, i.e. 6-7 times in half an hour when we walked him on the way home. This ranged from first stool being a little bloody getting softer until it was just liquidy. This obviously is of some concern as the kennel owner (who is an experienced breeder) said he had toiletted whilst he was there. This doesn't seem right to me so could anyone advise.

Thank you.

Was he fed his normal food, or whatever the kennel uses? this may be your problem, as dogs often have internal revolt when their food is suddenly changed, especially when already under stress!

He was fed his normal food as I took it along - however, I did provide quite a bit more than 4 days worth and he'd had the lot - plus some boneos and knowing him, whatever else he could get his teeth around! Even allowing for being slightly overfed, it does seem unusual! Normally, he's a 2/3 a day boy!!

Does he get stressed in kennels? The symptoms you are describing happen to my Hounds if they are put under even the smallest amount of stress and usually clear up within a couple of days. Hope he's all back to normal now.

The people who own the kennels always say he's absolutely fine, plays with other dogs is alert, interested in everything and no trouble, so he doesn't appear to be stressed, however, he is very attached to me at home and tends to be where I am, although there are no signs of separation anxiety when he's left alone.

He does seem to be back to normal at the moment but I obviously don't think it's good for him and want to try and avoid a repetition in the future as obviously we may need to leave him for more than 4 days at some stage.

I have noticed a difference in my dogs after kenneling if the weather has been rainy & cold. They've had problems with loose & runny stools then. When it's dry... no problems when they get home. They have their own food with them & pre-portioned in baggies.
toodles
