Tally, our six month old black Lab has aquired a slight limp since the easter break and I think we're the cause!! His daily exercise consists of: 15 minutes play on the local field in the morning and at lunchtime and a 40 - 60 minute walk in the evening.
Does this seem reasonable for a six month Lab pup or too much.
Over Easter though we went for a walk, got lost and ended up walking a lot further than we had intended and ever since he has walked with a very, very slight limp. Last weekend though on a walk it became a lot more obvious. We haven't walked him for the last few days and he does seem to be better but it comes and goes - as in, one moment he's walking perfectly and another time the limp is back.
I'm no vet but I can spot obvious injuries ie, swelling, something stuck in him etc and there is nothing like this which makes me think we've overwalked him, he's pulled a muscle (can they do this??) and he needs rest. Any other opinions??
Thanks, Rachel

6 months = 24 weeks, if you look at it like that it shows up what a baby he is still :-) Personally, I would say that an hour a day *walking* (do you mean pavement walking?) is far to much on top of his usual play routine, but then again, I tend to go easy on my pups exercise wise until their bones are stronger. Personally, I would complete rest him for a few days and then if he is still limping get him to a vet. If you are worried, get him to a vet straight away :-)

It is more than I would give a Lab of that age. When you say Play for the first walk, what exactly do you mean? I use play for training but 15 minutes af running for a ball is too much. I take a toy with me on a walk but just use it to keep the puppy's attention on me. I figure if the area around me is where the interesting things happen then that is the area my dog is going to want to be. From this you can imagine that all playing is kept within about a 4 yard circle. I would toss the toy into long grass and encourage my puppy to hunt it up. Efectively training for it's future job as a working gundog but also a fun thing for the puppy.
The 60 minute second walk I personally would restrict to nearer half of that. gradually extending it during the next six months.

Thanks for both these responses Leigh and John. The 15 minute play session is more of a training/toilet time/get out of the garden break really, I walk at snails pace around the (small) field about three times while Tally sniffs at everything and then has a few runs to catch up when I get too far away. I take a ball with me but only throw it a few times.
I thought when I was writing my first post that the responses were going to suggest that we're walking him for too long. It's so difficult to judge though when he still looks raring to go as it's time to turn round and go home. Not a problem though, 30 minutes it will be for the next few months:)
Thanks again, Rachel
