Topic Dog Boards / General / Marrow bones, anything I should know
- By bevb [gb] Date 20.07.05 10:25 UTC
I have found a nice local butcher who has a plentiful supply of marrow bones.
My little 6 month old Jack Russell has never had them before and I havn't fed them to dogs for over 20yrs.
I want to be able to give him one to occupy him while I am at work (I work part time).
Will he be ok to be left with them?  If he gets bits off will they be safe?   Will they upset his tum?  Anything else I should know?
I was given 4 today by butcher 2 very large and 2 smaller.  One of the smaller ones has a sharp thin bit of bone sticking out just too strong for me to break off but he probaly will.

IMHO you should never leave dogs unsupervised with bones.

A stuffed kong might be safer, save the bone for when you return.

Too much marrow can have, shall we say, a laxative effect.......

Agree with tohme you should never leave bones with dogs.  My Spanish can bit through many a thick bone with no problems!

I totally agree - never leave a dog unsupervised with a bone.  My two love raw marrowbones.  The problem is that with the hot weather, they never really eat a lot (of anything) and I end up picking them up out of the garden at the end of the day and binning them!  Perhaps I'll save what I've got left till cooler times.  Lucky they freeze!  And yes, marrow has a laxative effect.  I scoop about half out of my 9 y/old's bone - she can cope with what's left.  The young'un copes better! :)
