- By Guest [gb] Date 19.07.05 14:14 UTC
PLEASE COULD SOMEONE GUIDE ME ON MY 10 1/2 MONTH OLD BLACK LAB BITCH, SHE HAS NOT COME INTO SEASON YET, SHOULD I BE WORRIED? ALSO WOULD I BE ABLE TO GET HER NEUTERED AT THIS LATE STAGE BEFORE SHE DOES, AS I AM GOING TO BE TAKING HER ON HOLIDAY WITH THE FAMILY SHORTLY AND DONT REALLY WANT HER TO COME INTO HEAT WHEN WE ARE AWAY. ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. THANKS

All dogs are different.  It is better to let her have a season before spaying her.  Mine has just finished a very long frist season at the age of 10 months, but this can vary anytime from now till 18 months.

Don't worry nature will take its course and sods law will be while you are awya!!!!!!!!!!!

Bitches vary widely as to when they have their first season - it's usually between 6 months and a year in the average-sized bitch (giant breeds tend to be later, sometimes not until 18 months or even a bit later!). If you're going on holiday shortly I wouldn't have her operated on beforehand because of all the post-op care required - it would be unfair to a boarding kennels to have to cope with that, and if you're taking her with you, you could have problems finding a vet where you're staying if there was an emergency.

Is she showing signs that her season is imminent, such as temperament changes (just like adolescent girls, they can become moody!), is her vulva swelling, is she urinating more than usual?
