Hi there,
I just wanted to share with you all the great success i have had with flaxseed oil and fish oil. One of my dogs had terrible allergies to grasses pollens etc. and her coat was always dry. A month ago i started giving her a flax capsule and a fish oil capsule daily, with vitE every 3 days or so. The change has been miraculous, her coat is like butter and her itchies have cleared up tremendously. I just had to tell someone :D
I have King Charles spaniels by the way.

Excellent I always recommend feeding Fish Body Oils to dogs with Vitamin E; for anti inflammatory and other purposes.
Flaxseed although containing EFAs does not have the same anti inflammatory effect and can, in certain dogs, cause itchies.
It is important to give Vitamin E every time you give FBO, you cannot really OD and is necessary as the FBO can make Vitamin E less available to the dog.
Generally speaking flax seed oil is less successful in treating atopic dermatitis etc because the body needs to convert the ALA to DHA and EPA, some dogs cannot do this.

Would you recommend giving vitE on a daily basis?
I think the fish oil has helped her allergies and the flaxseed as made her coat so soft and shiny.
I cant remember where i read it,as i've read what seems like hundreds of websites in the past month or so,but it said that if a dog has an allergy to flaxseed that you should give fish oil as this will negate the negative affects of the flaxseed whilst still giving the coat benefits etc.
Does this make any sense?

If you give fish oil there is no NEED to give Flaxseed oil; it would be "overegging" the pudding!
The reason you give FBO is to provide the dog with EFAs and DHA/EPA. FBO is good for atopic dermatitis and is an anti inflammatory, unlike Flaxseed oil. The FBO will also give a shiny coat, you could also supplement with EPO
If you are giving any sort of oil at all you must give Vitamin E daily too; for a large dog I would reccommend 400 iu er day
