Topic Dog Boards / Health / supplements to gain weight
- By angel1 [gb] Date 13.07.05 16:04 UTC
hi
wondering if anyone can recommend any supplement ,that will help my 2 year old bitch gain weight, she is fed on the same amount daily as all my others dogs, who are all well covered, but she unfortunatly never seems to put any weight on.
- By tohme Date 13.07.05 16:08 UTC
Then perhaps you should try feeding her more?
- By angel1 [gb] Date 13.07.05 16:20 UTC
excuse me ,is there any need to be so nasty, for your information, she is fed more than is recomended, and eats just as well as my other dogs, but unfortunatley does'nt keep her weight on,she has been to the vets on numerous occassion's,with no avail, and this  has now come to be a major concern to us.people like you should be banned from the board
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.07.05 16:28 UTC
I don't tohme was meaning it that way, it's just like us some of us can eat loads and never put on weight others hardly eat anything and put the weight on!

What are you feeding your dog?  I have a boy who is the same and has only just started putting on his weight at 2 years of age, but he is a rather energetic, live life on your nerves kind of dog :d
- By tohme Date 13.07.05 16:46 UTC
Precisely perrodeagua!

I cannot see anything "nasty" in suggesting that perhaps what is sufficient for your other dogs may not be enough for this particular individual.

I can't quite see the logic of how this idea may be cause for me "being banned from the board..................."
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.07.05 16:46 UTC
You aid she gets the same as the others and eats well.  so the answer was correct.  If she has a poor appetite bit is taill a healthy weight (albeit a bit leaner than you would prefer) then I woudln't worry at all.

I have just had to read the riot act to my nearly 8 year old bitch who was practicaly an anorexic when younger.  She just filched the mixed salad I had chopped on the chopping board to go with my grilled chicken and Pitta bread.

From eating 3 days out of seven up to two years, to then eating well while pregnant and rearing pups to going back to not eating I just gave up and let her get on with it.

I fed her a high nutrient density food (Arden Grange Prestige) until she was about 4 eyars old, when she started eating most days.

Gradulaly she got to look better coverd,a dn actually since last year I ahve had to cut her food down as she was gaioning weight folowing spaying.

What was nasty about Tohme's suggestion? It's the obvious first idea - that her particular metabolism (all dogs being different) requires more input than your other dogs. How active is she?

Another suggestion (as obvious as Tohme's so I expect you'll snap at me too! ;) ) is to worm her.
:)
- By sharonb [gb] Date 13.07.05 20:16 UTC
I dont think Tohme was being nasty at all. But I do feel a little for Angel1. I know someone who has a bitch of similar age. She has tried everything to help put weight on her dog but although under a vet the dog isnot gaining. Everyone she meets asks why her dog is so skinny. I suppose Agel1 is just feeling defencive.
- By Missie Date 13.07.05 20:51 UTC
Hi Angel1, I asked my vet the very same thing tonight :) My girl is on three packs of naturediet a day but, because of her condition,  is still losing weight, roughly 2kg a week, she's fit and happy but terribly underweight. Anyway I asked him what she could have to bulk her up and he suggested boiled potatoes and pasta. Unfortunately she can't tolerate wheat so pastas' off the menu but I am going to try the potatoes as from tomorrow and see what happens.

hi all,
sorry to thome for snapping ,but after trying everything possible with our girl,we are at our wits end ,and yes of course stating the obvious in feeding her more, which we are doing,i did feel at the time of reading your answer thome, that you where being a little syastic,i do apologise if it was'nt meant that way,at the moment we are feeding her the recomended amount daily plus half again of royal canin large breed with added tripe /chicken,i can not possibly feed her anymore as this is all she will eat,i would'nt say shes an overly active girl ,if anything she can be quite lazy,i have heard of one supplement called fidocal high calorie liquid supplement ,but cant seemed to find anyone that stocks this product,i will maybe try  the potates and pasta, and sorry again to thome
- By luvly [gb] Date 13.07.05 23:15 UTC
My bitch isent normaly much of a muncher even when you leave loads of food out either so I kind of understand your point . I havent tried it but I hear you can buy somthing called nutri-cal its suposed to be a high cal suppliment that has omega oils in . I read about it some time ago but havent tried it Id prefer to try and make her eat more
(dont facny supplimenting ) but if she ever got to the stage where I couldent get her to eat enough to put enough weight on I might give it a go . Id try and find some more info on it before you buy it see what other people say about it if you really have to  .
- By jackie36 [gb] Date 27.10.05 18:29 UTC
You all seem to be missing the point her angel asked about a supplement for her dog not an argument about whether thome was being nasty or not
- By stakemaster [gb] Date 14.07.05 00:13 UTC
Has she also got bad breath or bad gas? If so she might be suffering from a lack of digestive enzymes. Check out Bac-Pak Plus, Eagle Pack Holistic-Natural Pet Food or similar. It might be worth checking for Giardia or EPI if she suffers from diarrhea or vomiting.

Hi try this, picked it up on another site....... have not tried it myself but the person who recommends it swears by it.
      SATIN BALLS.......

Ingredients.....
10 pounds mincemeat
1 lg box of Total cereal ( its an American recipe so you will have to get similar)
1 lg box of oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup of veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfurred molasses( you can get that from horse suppliers)
10 raw eggs
10 envoelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together

Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze

Thaw as needed

All my dogs go crazy for the stuff....but be careful it will put on weight pretty fast........ i feed a pack everyday.....half am half pm....with or without your normal Kibble........

When i want to increase weight  on a dog i feed more,

You will have to figure out for yourself how much to feed  your dog,

Hope this helps , wont hurt to try it,i have given it to a friend as 1 of her dogs is th same.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 14.07.05 17:40 UTC
I don't know but from reading what you put you feed the dried and meat together???  Try feeding her the dried and meat but seperately, one during the day and the other in the evening.

I have also heard that satin balls are good.
- By angel1 [gb] Date 15.07.05 19:14 UTC

Hi, just reading the posts about putting weight on dogs, currently my dobe is having stomach problems (please god it'll be sorted soon) but he used to be alot larger before his stomach was stapled, now he's underweight :-( is the any cooking guide lines that come with your recipe?  what a satin balls? I need to put weight on him quick!

Thanks

Luke & Bailey

Hi Luke......

Dos`nt say anything about cooking the ingrediants first, just says.....

Mix all ingredients together, devide into portions, then freeze......... defrost each portion as needed.......

Have not tried" Satin Balls"  myself..... as my dogs are the other way ,I have to watch their weight.

Some people also recommend "Tripe" for fatening up their dogs.......
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.07.05 14:39 UTC
I would be very careful about trying to fatten a dog who has had stomach problems.  these high fat recipes could lead a susceptible dog into Pancreatitis.
- By tohme Date 19.07.05 16:13 UTC
Could not agree more Brainless...........

Hi tohme, I have had a problem with my older boy holding his weight and I spoke with the people at Dorwest Herbs. They suggested that I put him on Tree Barks Powder - one teaspoon a day in his food - this is to slow his metabolism down a bit and so help absorbtion.
He has been on it for about 6 weeks now and there is a real improvement in him. He hasn't put on loads of weight but looks a good shape and is really well.
He has some food allergies but as the powder is herbal there is no risk of it upsetting him.
Hope this helps.
- By tohme Date 20.07.05 09:22 UTC
janeliz I am very familiar with TBP (Mostly Slippery Elm Bark), it is always on hand in case of a tummy upset.

Fortunately as none of my dogs ever have the squits or fail to thrive I have yet to use any over the past several years ;)

I am however unfamiliar with the claim that it slows down metabolism, how exactly does it achieve this?
- By janeliz [in] Date 21.07.05 07:29 UTC
Hi tohme, don't really know the detail of how it works .... just that it seems to have helped my boy. He was on it for a short spell after a really bad bout of haemorrhagic enteritis a few years ago and it helped settle his tummy down, he also got back to normal weight without much trouble, so when the Dorwest people recommended it again I was not worried to try it for this problem. It is the slippery elm that slows down the absorbtion I was told, this means that the food he eats does him more good......well that's my understanding of it.
Hope you get a solution to your problem, I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

Thank you :-)
- By lukie69 [gb] Date 19.07.05 19:24 UTC
What would you suggest? Im feeding him cooked chicken fillets with boiled rice at the moment, was going to start feeding him tripe once or twice a week until he's put some weight on but now you've got me thinking twice about that!

Thanks

Luke & Bailey
- By Hailey Date 21.07.05 08:51 UTC
Isnt slippery elm usually used for diarreah,it's purpose is to slow down the foods passage so it can be absorbed, instead of going straight through them to produce the squirts.

I wouldnt say that it slows down the metabolism tho, slows down the food, maybe :)

Hi Angel, I really feel for you as I too have a bitch that just won't gain weight, and also has an intolerance to wheat. We were advised to feed nature diet three times a day also, but she stopped eating it after a week or so.Someone recommended Butchers Tripe, so I have been feeding that with plain rice (from the pet shop)  and grated cheese mixed in. She really loves it, and for once her poor tummy hasn't gassed up like it was doing. I have sent away for some Tree Barks Powder from Dorwest Herbs (to aid digestion  and line the tummy), so I will report back in a few weeks as to how we get on.In the mean time, try and stay sane, and Good Luck!I would be interested to know if our doggies are related?
- By lukie69 [gb] Date 10.08.05 10:29 UTC
I FOUND THAT BAILEY IS ALLERGIC TO EVERYTHING OTHER THAN PORK, PASTA RICE ETC AND VEG, BUT APART FROM THAT HE CAN'T HAVE IT!  NOW THATS A NIGHTMARE! HE'S WELL UNDER WEIGHT, AT THE MOMENT ON MY VETS ORDERS HE'S ON HILLS ZD, (SPECIAL FOOD) £45 A 10KG BAG, WHICH WOULD BE OK IF IT WAS FOR A SMALLER DOG BUT HE EATS LIKE A HORSE LOL. IT'S NICE TO SEE HIM GETTING BETTER BUT NOT NICE SEEING HIM SO SKINNY :-(  ANY IDEAS?

THANKS

LUKE & BAILEY
- By tohme Date 10.08.05 10:58 UTC
If he is allergic to EVERYTHING bar pork, pasta and rice and veg there is no reason why you cannot either feed raw, or, if you prefer, home cook for him.

Much cheaper than the ZD diet.

ps presumably you came to this conclusion by having him allergy tested?
- By lukie69 [gb] Date 10.08.05 17:15 UTC
I've only had him for 3 months so Hell knows why the rescue centre didn't test him etc! Yeh so i had it done, the vet says just stay on with the ZD for a while till everything settles down, he's had 3 major operations and come through them (despite the vets opinion as they all though he wasn't going to make it...2 stomach twists is seriously bad!) i wasnt to feed him sausage etc but do't want to make the wrong decision :-(

hi all,
just to let you know, our girl has now started to put on weight ,to our delight, after talking to margaret at royal canin we have now put her back on puppy food ,which we will continue to feed until the right amount of weigh is gained, and then put her on the active dog formula,we have also moved her kennel and run to a more quieter position, where we can see a dramatic change in her attitude, she does'nt seem to be on guard /or on her toes as much, and she seem's much more  relaxed,so fingers crossed she keeps gaining the weight.hope fully in just moving her might have solved the problem.
- By martyb3275 [gb] Date 12.08.05 07:55 UTC
Hi, my puppy seemed to be on the lean side so i fed her Autarky mixed with skinners original meal soaked for at least 20 minutes and she has now put the weight back on and looks great.
- By carene [gb] Date 27.10.05 19:38 UTC
Why has this thread suddenly been resurrected when it started in July, and seemed to reach a natural conclusion in mid August
