What is the difference between a Prefix and a Affix?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 11.07.05 16:56 UTC
A Prefix can only be added at the beginning of a word. An Affix can be added at the beginning or end :)

As has been said, a prefix goes at the front and a suffix goes at the back, an affix can be used at either end of the name but which end, is dictated by the circumstances.

Breeders place their affix at the front of their puppies names. The new buyer places their affix at the end of the name. Then again, if the new buyer is the breeder of both the puppys parents, they can put their affix at the beginning, before the breeders affix. Confused? :D

Hello all,

Been trying to work this out and just can't manage it myself, can you help?

This is a hypothetical question, I have NO intention of becoming a breeder (don't consider myself experienced enough), but...

A breeder adds her affix to the front of a puppies name before she sells the litter. The person who buys her applies for their own affix/suffix (thingy!) and after several infutiating weeks is granted one by the KC. My question is this...

Where does the new owner put their affix, suffix, can they choose?  If the new owner does breed from this bitch, where do they put their kennel identity name when they register the pups. I've read through the KC info, and I still can't make head nor tail of it.

for example.

Breeder adds her affix 'Alpha' to the beginning of the pups names, eg 'Alpha lady' and then sells her.
Owner applies for and gets 'Beta' , so can now add this to her new dogs name, eg 'Alpha lady of Beta'
Owner breeds a litter of pups and adds her identity name to where? Would the pups be registed as 'Puppy of Beta' or 'Beta Puppy'.

Please help, I just don't get it!!

Thanks guys

Ali :)

Under normal circumstances, the person who breeds the litter puts her affix at the beginning of the name (Alpha Lady). New owner adds own affix to name - pup becomes Alpha Lady of Beta. In due course this person breeds from the bitch, and the pups are registered as Beta One.

Righto, got it (I think!)

Thanks a lot, things a bit clearer now.

What if the breeder bred the bitch but owned the sire, could they put their affix at the front then, or just if they bred both?

The breeder (owner of dam of litter) puts their own affix at the front of the litter names. If both sire and dam are 'Alpha' affix (say Alpha Lady of Beta was mated to Alpha Gentleman), then the owner of the bitch would name the litter Beta XXX; but if the stud dog owner wanted a pup it could be registered as Alpha Pup - I think! :o

*goes to do research!*

Yes JG that's right but in fact the said pup would be Alpha Beta Blah Blah.

Having quiet giggles to myself because if I were trying to understand this from scratch I wouldn't have a hope :D

However maybe the following is a better example. My affix is Trunorth and I bred a litter from my bitch Afterglow Emannuelle, I used Sh Ch Afterglow Engelbert, at stud so, If Mike Gadsby had got one of the pups, it would have become Afterglow Trunorth Pirouette. Because Mike bred both of the pups parents. See!!

Thanks Dawn! I knew that the breeder's affix came first, but if the stud dog's owner/breeder was also the breeder of the dam, then they could put their affix as a prefix, rather than as a suffix in the usual way ... luckily that doesn't happen very often! :D

*goes to dip head in cold water*
