Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / to spay or not to spay?
- By hannah [gb] Date 10.07.05 21:46 UTC
Hello there. We are the proud owners of a lovely black lab who is 3 months old. Our previous dog was spayed at 6 months old so we have no experience whatever about bitches and their seasons. We are not sure whether to have our lab spayed or not. We dont intend to breed from her but dont want her to have an op if there is any alternative. Been told that there is now medication that can be given instead of being spayed. Is this correct? All information you can give will be very helpful.

I would never have a bitch spayed until she had at least one seson which woudl allow for her to mature physicaly and mentaly, spaying can disrupt or halt this process.  Three months after the season is the best time.

Chemical means of stopping seasons can cause problems and are best kept as an emergency measure only.
