Okay, OH is getting his new Hawk in a couple of weeks, not the Gos Hawk we thought origianly but a Red Tail Hawk.  Well we need to name her and he wants the Latin equivilent (sp) to 'Bl**dy Hell' or something similar.  So any ideas post them please.

Hi

Having had to learn Latin for 3 years at grammar school, I'm afraid I can only remember one phrase - Pistrix Pistrix which means Shark! Shark! Think the chances of ever needing this phrase in English let alone Latin is fairly remote but just shows the irrelevant cr*p grammar schools insist on teaching. I'm sure there will be someone who actually paid attention in their Latin classes along soon...

I have found the Roman translation - Flemina but this could be a bit woosey for the size of bird !!
- By tohme Date 08.07.05 12:52 UTC
What about just "phlegm" :D :D :D

Sorry!
- By GSPMUM Date 08.07.05 12:59 UTC
MMMMmmmmmmm  !!

can't remember any curses in Latin i'm afraid - I did get a D in my GCSE tho!!  I do remember aquila is eagle, maybe that would do?  The only other things I remember are useless things like "carpe diem" (sieze the day), "aedificarve" (to build), things like that!  Or at a push, "Ego et coquue" (I am a cook, or something along those lines lol!)!

The wierdest thing is, you asked this question not two days after I ran into my loony latin teacher at Tesco - who I haven't seen in 6 years, and who moved out of my town!  Creepy! :)

Does it have to be Latin...I can swear like a trooper in various other languages :P
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 13:41 UTC
'Hell' is apparently 'tartarus' and 'damnation' is 'malum'. Any good?
- By GSPMUM Date 08.07.05 13:50 UTC
Like Malum, he wants it to be a powerful name for a big bird really.  The Harris is called Dyna which is Greek for powerful.

Can't be a girly name, has to be strong.
- By tohme Date 08.07.05 14:02 UTC
Well if you have one called Dyna can you call the other one Rod.....?

(It IS Friday so just ignore me.........) :D
- By GSPMUM Date 08.07.05 14:15 UTC
You've got it about you today !!!  :D
- By ShaynLola Date 08.07.05 14:21 UTC
Tohme

It started off appalling and is deteriorating rapidly. I'd have to suggest a nice lie down in a darkened room til whatever has overcome you this afternoon passes...:D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 14:25 UTC
Or 'Dyna' and 'Might'!! :D :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 14:30 UTC
'Accursed' is 'Sacer'; 'Evildoer' is 'Maleficus' or 'sceleratus'; 'determined' is 'Certus'; 'powerful' is 'potens' or 'validus'; 'might' is 'ingens' ...

"cynosure"  pronounced SY-nuh-shoor

definition: Anything to which attention is strongly turned; a centre of attraction.

Jacqueline :)

Aquila non capit muscas would be appropriate (sort of~) - but doesn't make a very good name :D

Daisy

Oops - forgot to say what it means - basically 'Eagles don't bother catching flies' :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 16:47 UTC
It doesn't really flow off the tongue, does it? :D
- By Daisy [gb] Date 08.07.05 16:49 UTC
No - but I can't remember how to swear in Latin :D Not that we would have learnt that in our very traditional school :D

After 40 years, I can only remember Adeste Fideles, Laeti triumphantes - and I don't think that there are any swear words in O come all ye faithful!! ;)

Could you use "heaven above" instead of bl**dy hell?????  :o
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 17:33 UTC
Ooh, I can still sing all the words to that! Plus most of the words to Gaudete!

The first sentence I remember from my Latin lessons back in the Dark Ages was 'puella columbam amat' - 'the girl loves the dove'. I'm sure one day it'll be invaluable!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 17:39 UTC
The red-tailed hawk's Latin name is 'Buteo jamaicensis', but I guess 'Buteo' isn't really suitable!
- By tohme Date 08.07.05 17:44 UTC
What about if you put "Sub" in front of it............. :D :D :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.07.05 17:45 UTC
ROFL! :D
- By kayc [gb] Date 08.07.05 17:47 UTC
You are on the ball today Tohme :D :D
- By tohme Date 08.07.05 17:49 UTC
Hey, I can play games......... :D
- By Moonmaiden Date 08.07.05 18:05 UTC
Bl**dy Hell is Cruentus Abyssus
- By tohme Date 08.07.05 18:08 UTC
So you could call her CrAby for short....................

I promise I am going now............
- By Moonmaiden Date 08.07.05 18:09 UTC
ROFLMAO
- By GSPMUM Date 10.07.05 20:16 UTC
GJ  OH says he knows the latin for Red Tail Hawk, what he is after is an expression, or an exclamation when someone is shocked or taken-a-back at what they see.

Keep the ideas coming.
- By kayc [gb] Date 10.07.05 21:13 UTC
Thats not Latin, thats French :P
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.07.05 21:26 UTC
Unfortunately my dictionary (from when I was in the Upper Fourth, circa 1970) doesn't include 'Blimey' or 'Wow', but I'll keep searching for something suitable.
:)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 10.07.05 21:36 UTC
Most Latin phrases don't exactly lend themselves to names for a hawk :D

Flocci non faccio

O di immortales

O me miserum

Vae tibi

How about ' Spurius' :D
